Should I schedule an induction?

So yesterday my doctor told me we would schedule an induction at my 39 week appointment. I have had a typical textbook pregnancy, and the only reason for scheduling an induction is because it's the common procedure. I wouldn't actually be induced until probably 41 weeks. I am going to a military hospital, mind you, so a lot of appointments book up fast. In fact, most weeks I can only make an appointment to see my doctor, a popular resident, during his lunch break. If I don't make an appointment for a possible induction next week, I risk not being able to make an appointment, if I should find myself in a position to be needing one, until after 41 weeks. Should I just schedule the induction to be on the safe side? I don't want to be induced, but I don't want to end up being 42 weeks pregnant and putting my baby at any unnecessary risk. Wwyd?

Re: Should I schedule an induction?

  • At my appt last week (39w4d), Dr. said my cervix was thinning, but still high and no dilation. We pre-scheduled an induction for 41 weeks because thats what his practice does. I am hoping I wont need to be induced, but am worried about it. My Dr. did say they would try stripping membranes or they have some kind of cream they can rub on the cervix (?) if LO doesn't come before our appointment on Monday (40w2d). Maybe you can ask if your Dr. if he can try that first.

Also, my Aunt went to almost 42 weeks and ended up needing emergency c-section because baby had bowl movement while in the womb and rapidly dropping heart rate. So there are some risks with allowing LO to be too overdue.

  • I wouldn't do it.  There's no reason at all to induce early if you have no medical problems.  And if you get to 41 or 42 weeks, they will take you in, appointment or no.  The average gestation for a FTM is 41 weeks and 1 day.

  • It doesn't hurt anything to schedule one. You can always cancel it if you end up not needing it.

  • My Doc said they would induce on the 27th (I am due the 20th) however he did say it was up to me. I am thinking of maybe trying to set it up for the 29th just give him a few more days without out going too overdue, since like someone said, there are some complications that can araise from waiting to long.

  • With the special circumstances i would. Especially since the space is that much more limited. Schedule forlater for sure to give your body the chance to deliver like you said at the 41 weeks. They can always cancel it if you dont need it. Good luck

Where are you getting this statistic?

I would. I can't imagine anyone wanting to go much past 41 weeks. It doesn't hurt to have it scheduled.

  • I probably wouldn't. If you end up going to 41 weeks you could potentially 'evict' LO before they're ready. Once you're passed 41 weeks I'm sure they would monitor you closely and induce if necessary. You're not technically 'post term' until 42 weeks, and many women go later than 41 weeks with healthy LOs and little to no complications.

  • I would go for schedule now, cancel later- IF youre up to getting inducecd at 41 weeks. It can be a little past the 41 wk mark

  • I would schedule it for 10 days past my due date.  Waiting a good length of time but not risking not being able to get an appointment with my doctor due to hospital routine procedure.  Then I would start crossing my fingers like crazy I wouldn't need it...

  • I am waiting to ask what their current plan is for the Doctors I go to. For my last son's birth they said they would induce if anytime past my due date. I guess they must have been one of the few who don't want to be responsible for waiting longer and any complications that might be there(bigger babies?) I didn't have to worry about it with either of my boys because they were 2 and 3 days before their due date. I am kind of expecting this little guy to come close to my due date too since everything has been right on and normal. If they mention induction at my last appt. I will go ahead and schedule it because my Dr. thought I had an 8lb + baby 2-3wks ago and I personally don't want him to get anymore crammed in there. I have a short torso and feel like he is already so limited on space. That is just my personal thing and obviously not medical related.
