Our sons name was somewhere in the 60s according to the most recent ssa list. The other name we were considering we decided against partly bc of how popular it felt (Henry) and it turns out that one is ranked as LESS common than the one we picked! Although our sons name is technically more common, I have never met anyone (kid or adult) with the name and I've only heard of it one one persons possible list on this board.
Our friends picked a name in the 600s for their daughter and I've already met two other little girls w that name.
I know part of it is regional, but just curious what your experience has been.
Re: Does the popularity of your kids name(s) match your experience?
BFP #2: 8.31.16 Dx w/ GD @ 28w DD Born @ 36w: 4.21.17
For us, our son's name ranked 496 in the year he was born (2010) and I do know of a couple other kids with his name. No one close to us, but still know who they are.
One of our favorites for our baby this time is Natalie, which is ranked 14, a little high for me personally, but since I do not know of anyone by that name, I am keeping it on the list. Plus I have loved it since I was younger. Who knows once they start school how many there will be though.
So, I think it just all depends. Main thing for me is staying away from the top 10.
I guess so. My name is Chasity, which has rarely ranked on the SSA. But it sounds like several more common names like Chelsea and Charity and people often hear or read those names instead. DH is Douglas. He's named after his father, who was in part named after the general his father (DH's grandfather) served for (MacArthur). So the name is familiar but has seen more popular days and feels a bit dated. DS is Theodore. Familiar but not too common. It's definitely trending up, it jumped 30 points between 2010 and 2011! If it's suddenly in the top 10, I'd feel cheated. Our #2 pick for boys is William, we know it's super popular but at least we'd know what we were getting into.
Yes, it matches my experiences.
Elinor isn't ranked at all, but Eleanor is #150. Though, it is increasing in popularity. I only know of one other little Eleanor, but not IRL. I know of her from the Bump. We call our Elinor by a nickname, Nora (#137), and so far, I've met one other Nora who attended the same day care for a little while.
I think a lot of it is regional. What is popular on the SSA lists (Jacob, Mason, Isabella) and on this board is not necessarily what I see a lot of in my daughters classes. If I went by my own observations only (in the LA area), I would think every child in the nation was named Madeline, Brooklyn (yuuuuuck), Ava, Ella or (J/K/A/Br)ayden.
My own daughter is Kaya which is low on the SSA list (barely broke the top 1000) and I've never met anyone with the name.
I think also we are all hyperaware of hearing our kids' names.
My LO's name is in the 300s and I was surprised, b/c I have only met two ever in my life (one of which is where I got the name). There are 2 other babies on TB with the same name, that I have seen.
Other names that I feel like I hear SO OFTEN on this board were ranked well below LO's which was surprising, but give it a few years and those names may skyrocket whereas I don't think LO's is going anywhere.
Same, but DS is James. I know a ton of kids with James as the mn though.
The national popularity and state popularity of our son's name is in the top 100 (#63 vs #87). At #87, this means there are only 102 boys born in 2011 that have the same name. With that in mind, I do not know any one else who named their son Thomas, at least locally. It might have to do with the fact that I do not know many young parents and the one's I do go with names like Atticus and Atlas and Logan.
I figure we'll see more boys named Thomas as we hit the school years.
DD is Charlotte. We were deciding between Charlotte and Evelyn. In her daycare there are 2 Evelyns so we are happy with our choice. Definitely popular but not over saturated.
Choosing a boy name this round is proving to be difficult! Love Alexander but don't want him to be the 1 millionth Alexander.
I've yet to run across another little Philip.
I hear Andrew everywhere.
I think you are right when you say a big part of it is regional. Caroline is HUGE in the South, but it's in the 80s in popularity overall. Also, I know 2 baby Genevieves, but I think that's above 300 in popularity. With as often as I hear Charlotte and Henry, I also expected those to be higher. The top 1-20 seem right on, but after that I think popularity is more regional than anything else.
With my son Connor, I haven't met any other little boys with this name so far (which surprises me). I know of some Connors (via Facebook), but they aren't close friends and I don't know any where we live. I think Connor is around 60 in terms or ranking.
As for Kate (Katherine), I think that in my circle it is unusually popular. I know several little Kates and in her preschool there are probably 5 Katherines between the 2 year olds and 4 year olds (and the school is less than 100 students total). I don't really mind, but I will admit being surprised at how often I encounter another little Kate.

No more TTC for us. We are done, and at peace, as a family of 4.

NO!! The SSA rankings and rumblings on TB always confuse me. DS1 is Jackson and the way it's discussed around here, you'd think every other boy is named Jackson/Jaxson/Jaxon. Over the years, he's never, not once been called Jackson S. in school, camp, sports and playgroups. In fact, he's not just the only Jackson in his preschool class, but the entire school. I also recently got a list of approximately 250 kids under the age of 5 in our neighborhood and there wasn't another Jackson. VERY reassuring since this is the pool of kids with whom he'll go to grade school. However, we do seem to run into other Jacksons more when we travel
Not here either!
My boys are Sam and Jack and we have met maybe 2 other Jacks. (and no Jacksons!) We have met a Samantha but no other Samuels.
I know of 3! baby boys named Luke just from my facebook in the last 6 months. We know 2 Logans and one Sophia and one baby with a middle name of Sofia but no others. I also know only one Aiden, one Braiden and one Jayden. Really strange when you consider how crazy popular they are supposed to be.
At Jack's kindy orientation there were maybe 30ish kids and there were 4 boys named Chase and about as many Anna/Annies. Neither are crazy high on the charts.
My son's name is Nicholas. My cousin named her son Nicholas and friends of ours named their son Nicholas.
My daughter's name is Ava. I haven't met another Ava in real life. I know quite a few people on the Bump that have named their girls Ava.
My older daughter is Moira. We've never met another Moira IRL, and in the US it's not in the top 1000 for SSA. I think it was 1400 or so last year.
My younger daughter is Maeve. In real life I knew one before we had her, a former student, and since her birth have met two others. Funny one is around the same age and in the same museum play group. There were only 6 or so kids, and two were Maeve!
DD is Sophie...
My mom works in the elementary school system, and hasn't come across a single Sophie/Sophia!
I used to work in an Orthodontist office- and out of the thousands of patients we had, I knew 2 Sophias. One was a patient, the other was the DRs niece.
Weird how it's #1, but have come across so few...
