I love this board and wanted to share that I had my baby and had my natural birth in a hospital. I was very nervous about being able to pull it off. I had an epi at 8cm with DS after being pressured into it by my nurse. I was determined to have a completely different experience with my second baby. I went to a different hospital and started seeing a midwife practice instead of an ob.
I started having little contractions after having sex with my H on my due date. I had a midwife appointment earlier that morning and they do a routine cervix check at 40 weeks. She said she "wasn't impressed by my cervix" and it seemed I still have some work to do. I was 1.5 cent and 30% effaced. Well, the contractions started up right after the sex. They were about 10 mins apart for about 30 mins and then quickly becamse 5 mins apart. They were very easy contractions and I wasn't sure if this was it. They continued at 5 mins apart the entire evening. At around 7pm, I called my mother and told her she might be coming out tonight to watch my DS. (She lives an hour away) She convinced me to call my midwife and just give her a heads up even thought the contractions were so minor. My midwife wanted me to have my mother come out right away because she had a feeling this was going to happen fast. I was in complete disbelief only because the contractions were so easy. I was making dinner, putting DS to bed, all just fine.
My mother got here at about 11pm. I was laying down trying to get some sleep. The contractions were annoying enough to keep me from sleeping. We all went to bed and I laid awake trying to get myself to calm down enough to sleep. At around 1am, I had a contraction that was a little bit more intense than the last and I thought we'd better head to the hospital just in case. (I'm 45 mins away from the hospital) My mother had been begging me to go all night. Again, the contractions were just so wimpy!
We left for the hospital and the entire ride there the contractions were coming three minutes apart. I still wasn't sure if this was it and was afraid I'd get sent home on my second baby! The contractions were fast, but still nothing to even breathe through. I was talking through them and laughing.
We got to the hospital at 2:15am. I got checked in and went to a room. My favorite midwife was on call that night. She has been a midwife since the 70's and REALLY knows her stuff. She checked me and I was 4cm and completely effaced. She said that I would be having this baby before my son woke up this morning. I just didn't believe it. I expressed to her my feelings of being nervous about going natural. She held my hand and said she knew I could do this and that she and my nurse would be here to help me through it. She had me start walking around doing lunges with every contraction to keep my pelvis loose. On the second lunge, my water broke and at that point the contractions became stronger. I kept walking and swaying as told.
About an hour later, I felt the contractions climb to a new level. They were very intense. I swayed and started at a spot on the wall, holding onto the railings of the hospital halls to keep focused. It worked great. When I felt I couldn't sway anymore, I went to my midwife and told her I wanted to try something else. We went to my room and she breathed with my through a couple more contractions. I started to get emotional suddenly and felt like I couldn't breathe. She looked right into my eyes and said that this was the hardest part, but that it wouldn't last long. Within seconds my body started pushing. She had me climb onto the bed on all fours. I started crying hysterically for what seemed like no reason and my AWESOME delivery nurse just hugged me. My H said I only cried for about 30 seconds and then I was pushing. The baby was sunny side up and my back was killing me. I rolled onto my back and my midwife told me to give a little push. I did, and the baby rotated. On the next contraction my midwife had me push very very slowly. She rubbed olive oil on me so I wouldn't tear and she slowly eased the baby out. This felt like torture to me, but I didn't tear. I started to lose focus during the pushing. It was so intense and I didn't want to relax my legs to let the baby come down. It was so hard to focus.
My baby girl came out at 9lb 1.8oz and 21 inches long at 5:06am. She was placed on my stomach and nursed within minutes. It was incredible. I was only in the hospital for less than three hours and pushed for less than 10 mins. Because she came out so fast, they gave me a shot of pitocin afterwards to help me contract. Everyone in the hospital was calling the baby "the 9lb baby that flew out." I couldn't have asked for a better birth. It was amazing. I never once thought about getting an epidural. I feel so very lucky.
