Return to Work Time

How long did your OB/MW put you on leave? I delivered vaginally, and she has me on EIGHT weeks! IDK if that's due to my episiotomy or age or what. She also had me on 6 hours bedrest after I was transferred to Mother Baby, for a total of 8.5 hours. I thought I was going to go bonkers.

It just seems like 8 hours is a little extreme for a vaginal birth.

Re: Return to Work Time

  • My doctor hasn't released me yet but I get 8 weeks of maternity leave for having a c-section and I plan on taking all of it.

  • I am taking 8 weeks and I had a c-section.  Hopefully my OB is on board with this at my 6 week pp visit because I am plan on returning to work on 7/2.  Eight weeks seems like a lot for a vaginal delivery.  I would think it would be more like 6 wks and you can return to work.

I didn't realize there was any bedrest time for a vaginal delivery.  I assumed they want you in bed for some time afterwards but 8 hrs does seem like a lot.

  • My OB does 6 weeks for vaginal and 8 for c-sections. She said she can't legally give more.

Lol, yes they can. Maybe she meant medically.

My work gives 6 for vaginal and 8 for c-section.  I was on bedrest for 24 hours with the c/s and I was afraid to get out of bed the first time.  LOL.

  • 8 wks because of my c-section but honestly I could've gone back after 2 (not that I would want to!)

  • With ds #2 I was given 6 weeks, but I took 12 I couldn't imagine leaving my 6 week old, now I'm a sahm so it doesn't matter.  Bed rest after that sucks my nurse had me up an in the shower after less than an hour!

  • Mine has me on 8 weeks for a C but I am actually going back 4 days sooner and the nurse was fine with writing me a note for that.  I definitely *could* have gone back probably after 3 weeks but I am going back right after hubby gets out of school for the summer so we won't need day care until sept.

  • Maybe your dr is just nice like that. M dr gave me ten weeks of paid leave for my first two DDs, who were both c/s, though I took 12 weeks under FMLA (1 without pay and 1 with vacation). I SAH now but she would have gotten me 10 paid weeks again for DD3.

  • I'm returning to my therapy practice this week (3.5 weeks post partum c-section) because I have to (my covering therapist will be out of the country for a couple of weeks). I only work a few hours a week at it and the most trying thing is the flight of stairs to my office so it's really not a big deal. I also already restarted my job search but am not expecting to get anything right away so I think that buys me time.

Hope everyone is healing well and enjoying their little ones!

That is great that you got 10 weeks of paid leave, but getting paid has nothing to do with your OB. Your OB can approve you for the leave - it is up to your job whether it is paid/how it is paid, etc.

My OB puts 6-8 weeks approximation on the FMLA paperwork. They won't put more than 8 weeks unless, God forbid, 8 weeks down the line I needed more time for a medical reason. I'd imagine then I'd have to fill out another form, but I'm not sure. I am taking my full 12 weeks of FMLA, which you are entitled to for bonding with the baby should you choose to take it. I believe some people can take up to 16 weeks of FMLA for the birth of a child, but unfortunately I work for a municipality and we are only entitlted to 12. I am also entitlted to get paid for my leave, but only if I have that much sick/vacation time to cover it. Under my work contract, I must exhaust all my sick/vacation time starting on the first week of my maternity. I am allowed, should I choose, to keep 5 days of vacation and 5 days of sick (which I will be doing). In other words, if I had 12 weeks of sick time banked, then my maternity leave would be 100% paid for. Unfortunately, I do not, and I've exhausted all my time besides the 5 days vacation and 5 days sick that I want to save so I will not be getting paid for 12 weeks. I am OK with this as we've budgeted for it since I got pregnant.

  • My OB told me at the beginning of my pregnancy that for a vaginal birth they would only approve 6 weeks and 8 weeks for a c section. For FMLA you can take up to 12 weeks and thats what I'm doing. I'm having to use personal time to supplement my last few weeks of pay but it's worth it to me. My LO was 5 weeks early so I feel like I need to maximize my time with him!
  • I'm taking 10 months, and DH is taking 2 months (we're in Canada and get 12 months of combined Parental Leave).

Also, I delivered vaginally and the midwife said I could go home 3 hours after delivery.
