LO will only sleep in our arms. Help!

Is anyone else dealing with this?  LO sleeps great and is not fussy at all, but will only sleep if someone is holding him.  DH and I are taking shifts at night and it's so exhausting.  I am BFing and I don't mind the nightly feedings, but I desperately need to sleep in between them!  Does this get better?  LO is only five days old but I'm afraid of how long this will last.

  • Does your LO like his swing? If so you might want to look into a rock n play sleeper. My LO did not sleep in his bassinet at all (well would for the first few minutes but that was it) and after that would only sleep on my chest/with me holding him, but he sleeps great in his rock n play!

  • My little one was refusing to sleep in his bassinet, he might sleep 30 minutes at the longest. We ended up noticing he would sleep great in his swing and car seat. So last night I went out and bought the rock and play. He slept all night, I had to wake him up to feed him. So many people have told me they loved it, now I know why.

  • Yes, it gets better. 5 days isn't very long. Anything that happens in the first few weeks...even months...can't really be considered a routine. He needs time to adjust. He just spent the last 40w suspended in a warm bath, and now he's out in the cold with arms and legs that don't do what he wants them to, and he feels the he heaviness of his own body. Try swaddling. Most babies Love this. If you aren't worried about nipple confusion, give him a pacifier when he goes down. That will allow him to comfort suck. I used this in the hospital really well, but ended up with minor nipple confusion and had to stop.

Mine also seems to prefer his PNP to his crib. He'll sleep for 3-4 hours in it.

  • Are you swaddling??? Honestly, it makes the biggest difference in the world. Basically they will wake themselves up if not swaddled but as soon as they are nice and snug they feel safe and womb like. I would try that.

We have the summer swaddle pods which have Velcro and they work great!

You might try the 4 S's-

Swaddle, Sucking (Pacifier), Swinging, Shhhhh-ing (White noise on a sound machine).... One or any combination of these might do the trick. Our son loved to be swaddled with white noise. He would take a pacifier and then spit it out when about to doze off to sleep. He didn't need the swinging, but we would have added it next had those three not worked. Once we started this he started sleeping 6-8 hour stretches at night vs the 2-3 hours of restless sleep before.. Hope that helps :) We love the Rock N Play too! :)

  • At 2 weeks old, we are dealing with this for LO.  I had a RNP for him- he won't stay in it.  I went out and bought an arm's reach cosleeper so he is literally right next to me- he won't stay in it.  I've noticed though that I can get him to stay in it for short periods during the day, and then at night, he will sleep in it until DH turns out the light.  So last night, I put a little light in it to see if that would help.  He stayed in there for a couple hours.  I figure it's a start!
  • I just sing "zombie mom-zombie mom...Adelaide's got a zombie mom" over and over to the tune of the spiderman theme.... it doesn't help her sleep, but maybe it says something about my current sanity....

  • That lasted just over a week with us.  We'd try the crib each time she fell asleep, and then end up on the couch with her anyway.  I built what I called my Pillow Fort, the pillows propped up my arms which were holding her so that I could take naps knowing she wasn't going anywhere.  Eventually she started sleeping in her crib, swaddled up tight.  Hopefully yours will be as easy, but yeah, the first week or so is tough!  GL!

Right at 2 weeks she started doing this and would only sleep on our chests.  We noticed at night it was the worst.  We asked her pedi at her 2 wk appt and she said that they are so used to being in your tummy and hearing the gurgling and heart beating etc and now they are out in the open with flailing arms and legs and it is so quiet at night.  She said do whatever we have to do-of course within reason and safely--to be able to sleep a bit.  So I have been sitting in the recliner with her or laying on the couch with her on my chest.  She wouldn't even sleep in the RNP those few days.  Now she is much better and once she is alseep can be moved to the RNP or her Boppy Lounger at least.  Swaddling does make a difference too.

  • Thanks for the advice, ladies.  The same night that I wrote this message, LO finally decided that his crib was not that bad and will sleep in it for a few hours each night if he is swaddled.  He also sleeps in his RNP during the day, so things are looking up!
