Beach advice?

So we are heading to beach in a few weeks! I have to admit that I have some anxiety mixed in with all my excitement. I've never had an infant at the beach before. For any of you that are experienced, what do you recommend that I bring? It would be nice to take LO into the water for the experience, but of course it would be limited. I am also going to be nursing at the beach, so any tips for that as well would be appreciated (I'm also going to ask for tips on the BFing board). Thanks ladies!!

Re: Beach advice?

  • We just went. I made sure DS had a hat, long sleeved rash guard and of course trunks. One thing we couldn't do without was a sun shade. We got ours off of Amazon for about $35. It was called the Texsport sunshade I believe (bumping from phone so I can't add link) but it was a tent-like shelter that fit into a bag that was small and had a sling to carry it. My pedi said to watch his fluids and make sure he was peeing enough. If not we could give him up to 12 oz of water. He never had a problem.

We also bought the "sun goggles" from Target and DS loved them because he fusses when the sun gets in his eyes.

Lather on the sunblock and have fun!

  • We spent a week in Mexico when LO was 3 months.  The only advice I have is slather the sunscreen and take a hat.  I didn't spend much time in a swimsuit, but a nursing tank is much easier for nursing than a swimsuit.  I did find the beach chairs to be terribly uncomfortable for nursing, so if you're going by car, you might bring a chair with you.

  • Bring a light sheet weight blanket to nurse under. Keep up your fluids, too!

I remember you said you used the wipes to clean your pump parts, did you use any water to clean? What about bottles? How did you clean those?

  • We just got back. We used lots of sunscreen, hats and limited outside activity (easy the first few days since there was a tropical storm!!!).
I don't really have tips for nursing since we use formula now, but I just felt like there was sand everywhere, which freaked me out. I used extra handwipes because of sand and not wanting to get it in her eyes since she rubs them a lot.
We took a few cute pics, did a little splish splash with our feet in the ocean and then went to nap under an umbrella (apparently she loves beach naps. ha).  We went in the pool for a bit one day too, but she didn't like it cos it was cold (we had used my mom's hot tub connected to her pool on a low "heat" previously, which she liked better since we made it bathtub temp).
We also had a sunshade, but she was trying to crawl everywhere so we weren't out there too much. We had the little swimmers diapers, but then she peed out of them, so that wasn't fun either, so make sure you have lots of diapers (we used regular ones most of the time when we didn't go in the water, but I hate changing them in her swimsuit since you have to take the whole thing off to change them).
Although we didn't do much beach stuff this year, I did feel like it will help prepare me more for next year, when I'm sure (hope) it will be more fun!
Don't stress out, and just try to have fun! Just maybe try to plan some other activities so you don't get bored -- we went shopping some cos she loves people watching and did some other things too.

We used drop ins and brought enough fresh nipples to not need to wash :)

  • Our friends just went on a beach vacation with their LO. They brought her little bathtub along. They set up the tub under shade and basically used it as a kiddie pool. They'd take their LO for a quick dip in the ocean/ pool each day and then she'd use her "pool" to cool off for the rest of the day. I thought it was a neat idea.
