XP: D&C Yesterday - Post Partum Bleeding

Hi All,Just wanted to share my D&C experience yesterday.  I'm 4 weeks PP and passed what appeared to be some retained placenta or tissue on Thursday morning.  This prompted me to do some online research, and I realized that it is abnormal to have bright red bleeding after about 7-10 days PP. (oops!)  TMI, but my bleeding had been bright red the whole time, and hadn't lightened up at all.  I went to the doctor's yesterday morning for a sono, and sure enough there was some sort of large mass still in there!  Although it was not an emergency (since my bleeding wasn't too heavy), they squeezed me in the OR for a D&C to remove any excess 'stuff.'  They didn't think I would likely pass it all on my own.The D&C procedure is pretty quick and not that bad...however, of course I had to have complications!  Apparently, my uterus was soft and got clipped by one of the tools.  They had to make an incision in my belling button and above my pubic bone - I think to cauterize the punture(s).  (still piecing the exact story with DH's help) Then, they pumped air inside of me to ensure my intestines were not affected.  Fun, fun!  Now my stomach and back are so sore, among other things!  At least I have some percocet to help with the pain.I'm a FTM and probably should have realized my consistent, bright red flow was a reason to at least call the doctor and verify if it was normal or not....but I just assumed since bleeding up until 6 weeks can be normal, that I was ok.  (didn't research or know what 'heaviness or color' of bleeding that is considered normal.)  If any of you have similar bleeding still, I recommend calling your doctor to make sure it is ok.  ;)

  • Oof, that doesn't sound fun! Stop apologizing for not knowing what is normal after something you've never done before, it is not on you to know all of that. The docs should have checked the placenta to make sure nothing was retained before releasing you, and informed you extensively about what to watch for in bleeding. Sorry the system failed you, but glad everything is fine. Hope you're feeling better soon!

  • Hmm this makes me think... I'm not bleeding anymore, but I do pass what looks like tissues at least once a day... I think if it continues by Monday I might as well give them a call. I like to stay away from Dr. Google cause I know he turns a simple headache into brain cancer lol

Byt, I hope you get to feeling better soon, and thank you for sharing your story!

  • Wow, glad all is taken care of now.  How scary though.  As a FTM, I probably wouldn't have realized red bleeding at 4 weeks out wasn't normal either.  You can't know everything and if no one told you this, then you had no way of knowing.

  • Thanks for posting so I know that its not normal!  I was under the impression that I could be bleeding for weeks but the color would gradually change.  At least now I know what to call for!!  Thanks!
