Hours between feedings (ff question)

Right now LO eats anywhere between 2.5-3.5 oz at each feeding (formula fed) every two hours. I feel like when I am done feeding her it is only a matter of minutes before I am taking out a bottle from the fridge to bring it to room temp. Would it make sense to give her a little bit more and try to space out feedings to every 3 hours instead? Would something like that work? It would be amazing to have a little bit more time between feedings.

Re: Hours between feedings (ff question)

  • My LO eats 3-3.5 oz. every 2.5-3 hours... Pedi said you can stretch them up to 3 hours during the day... but wouldn't go longer than that until he is a few more weeks older... but then again, he is older than your LO...

I'd stay around 2 hour feedings for right now...

  • I'm breast feeding, but during the day, I am feeding every one to two hours. I feed on demand. I'm sure some of it is co fort feeding, but at this point I think it's good to let them eat however much they want

For us it is generally about every 3 hours between feedings, but sometimes it will only be 2 hours. The amount of formula doesn't seem to matter. He devoured 4oz yesterday at one point and an hour and a half later wanted more! Right now just feeding on demand.

Does your LO continue sucking after bottle is finished? This is how we knew our lil guy needed to be moved up to 3 oz. He would finish his 2oz bottle and still be rooting for more.

This is pretty much how our LO feeds. He was eating 3 oz every 3 hours, but I think he's going through a growth spurt because the last few days he's eating 4 or 5 ounces at a time.  However, the time between his feedings when he eats that much has gone up to around 4 hours.

So pretty much we're still feeding on demand, but not as vigilant about the time between feedings because our pedi said that now that he's surpassed his birth weight we can let LO dictate how often he's hungry.

Ditto. I really don't know what the rules are for FF babies. I was told to feed on demand, no more than 3-4 hours between feedings. He goes anywhere from 5-10 minutes on each side, and sometimes goes back for more.

  • My little one is 11 days old and for us it was a disaster to wake him to feed him. He wasn't hungry, wouldnt eat a full meal, then wanted to eat every 1.5 hours. So now we eat whenever he wakes up. Its typically 3 hours. Sometimes less sometimes more.  He even pulls some 4 hours.  He seems happier and so are we. And he is gaining great weight.  I'm breasfeeding with the exception of 1 bottle of formula a day. this is what has worked for us.
  • I am BFing as well, so my LO doesn't stay full quite as long, but my pedi told me to make sure to wake her up to feed every 3 hours until she's about a month old and then we should start moving to every 4 hours. For night time, he advised us to feed on demand. This being said, he explained that, if we are waking her to feed like clockwork during the day, that she will fall into a schedule at night where she is sleeping 4-5 hours stretches at a time. I can't wait for that! GL!

LO eats 2 oz every 2 hours.  We don't wake her and that is usually about the time she gets restless and nothing else works to make her happy.

  • My guys eat about 2 1/2 oz every 2 hours during the day, and usually 3 hrs at night.  We only wake to feed when 1 wants to eat and the other is still sleeping.  We never wake if they are both sleeping.
