food throwing

help!! please make it stop. I don't know what to do anymore. I am trying to get him to eat more "real" food. he loves pancakes, waffles and muffins but even those he will throw sometimes. but usually it is just stuff he doesn't want after taking one lick. sometimes I wind up just giving him a puree but now he wants to only feed himself the puree with the spoon and when he gets mad he throws the wet spoon to the floor as well. loves sucking down a pouch of food and I am sure he will do that even if not hungry. sometimes I think he throws it just b/c he isn't hungry/is done. but I am not sure and I don't want him to go hungry either. any advice? thanks!!!

Re: food throwing

  • I'm in same boat with my twins.  They LOVE to throw food, cups, silverware, anything on their plate.  Looking forward to hearing how others are handling.

I say "don't throw your cup, food, etc" and "STOP! Don't Throw!" and "Please put the cup back on the tray" and "Please give that to Mommy if you don't want it"... but none seem to get the message through to either child!

  • Giselle likes to feed herself and if I am giving her oatmeal or cream of wheat, I have to give her own spoon to play with while I am quickly trying to shovel as much as I can into her mouth.  When she starts throwing food, I assume she is finished.  I will then say "all done" in Spanish and take the food away.  If she seemed to eat very little, I offer a snack an hour later.  Not sure if this is actually working but I have noticed that when I say "all done" while she is throwing food she will take additional bites.  So maybe it is registering??

I can't offer advice, only sympathy.  Chase likes to throw food and drop it for the dog. I've started saying "We don't throw food, we eat food." or taking it away from him.  Usually I think he's finished when he starts dropping food, as he doesn't do it when he's really hungry.  I have jumped up to grab the wash cloth to wipe his face and hands and when he sees me do that, he starts to eat again. Sigh.

We just take the plate away for a few minuets, she then watched every one eating and says more.  It's a battle we also have with toys, crayons, everything.

  • She usually gets at least one piece on the ground and then when she goes for a second I have to put my hand out very quick and say, "oh, this is for Mama?  Thank you."  I pretty much almost take it out of her hand, but she then puts them in my hand instead of on the floor if she is done or goes to put it in my hand and then right into her mouth if she is not.

At the babysitter's house, they have a dog.  And she LOVES to feed her, so that is a different story.
