FTM-- Freakout question.

So we've noticed that our LO is taking really short shallow heavy breaths while sleeping.  She doesn't seem to be bothered by it and when she cries... it isn't a weak cry at all.  But to us it sounds a bit like she's struggling to breathe while sleeping.  She does sound a bit congested and we've tried the nasal aspirator with no luck.   She's only 12 days old and so we aren't able to give her any meds at all (not that I would even know what to give her for this).
Is that breathing normal?  Should I call the doc?

Re: FTM-- Freakout question.

  • They don't sleep like us. They take 60+ breaths a minute. That said, they told us of you notice a change one way or another immediately call your pediatrician. Could be all just fear mongering, but I call it erring on the side of caution.

  • It sounds pretty normal to me. But if your clinic (or insurance) has a nurse info/triage line, it wouldn't hurt anything to call them for some peace of mind.

  • My DD2 did this a lot in her first two weeks. I noticed it usually happened when she was just falling into a deep sleep.  She doesn't do it very often anymore.
  • DD1 has always taken deep breaths and holds it in and then grunts when letting it out, they say its nothing. It still concerns me but I just watch it and make sure shes not struggling. I would think if she was struggling she'd wake up crying? But if it concerns you call in! Don't feel bad about the FTM thing, everyone mom experiences it, and heck you are responsible for a whole nother LIFE! Not somehting to take lightly! Do you have to go in for 2 week check? If its in the next day or 2 could wait and ask then.

  • My DS breathes different when he's sleeping sometimes.  It will speed up and then slow down.  I told this to his cardiologist (monitoring heart murmur) and he wasn't concerned.  He said that was normal.

  • I am sure it's fine, but I would call! Better safe than sorry and that's what they are there for! :-)

  • All three of my boys have done this, it sounds very normal to me.  They are still learning how to breath, but if your worried call your pedi.

  • I asked the doctor this and he said all of this is completely normal, even the "congested" sound. They would be frantic if they were not able to breath.

This is the same thing our LO pedi said to us at our first appointment yesterday.
