3rd Trimester

Gush of water-- went to hospital

This morning at work I got up to go to the restroom and a gush of water came out on the way there- so instantly I assumed my water broke. I went to the hospital and they tested me and put me on monitors and said it wasn't my water that broke and I wasn't having contractions.. I was having and still am having back pain. I'm at home now worried to death I dont know what the water was. I'm worried about my baby- has this ever happened to anyone??

Re: Gush of water-- went to hospital

  • When I was pregnant with my daughter this happened to me.  I woke up on a Saturday went to get up and felt a gush.  I went to the hospital and they told me I was peeing myself.  I went home and continued to leak.  I was so embarrassed that I didn't want to call the doctor again.  I continued to have small gushes throughout the weekend and finally Monday morning woke up and the bed was soaked.  I went to my doctor's office first thing and it turns out my water had broken and the monitor showed contractions.  My doctor was really upset that they didn't do an internal at the hospital.  I had to be put on IV antibiotics right away but my baby was delivered healthy ( I was 38 weeks) If you are still leaking I would call the doctor again better to be safe than sorry good luck

  • It could be a slow leak.  If you feel anymore gushes, I would go back and have it checked again...contractions or not.

(TMI) FWIW, the other day, I thought mine broke and I had a minor freak out.  It turns out, apparently when you sweat down there, it can feel like a little bitty gush of fluid.  It's like, cervical fluid + sweat and can make quite a mess.  TMI, I know.

  • Lurking from 2nd tri. I had a gush of fluid with ds. I was rolling over to get out of bed and I felt a sudden gush that ran down my leg (I guessed about a cup of fluid). It was slightly pink when I wiped. Went to L&D at the direction of my OB and they said my water hadn't broken. They said it was likely fluid from behind my mucus plug, but not amniotic fluid. So that's one possibility. But I will tell you, I had what I thought was BH through that day and occasionally leaked more of the watery light pink liquid, and by midnight I was waking up with real contractions and had the baby the next day. So yeah if the fluid continues, I'd definitely call the Dr again to be safe.

Same thing here. When pregnant with DD1 I got up off the toilet and felt a gush down my leg. I thought I had pee'd myself. I smelled my pants and it didn't have an odor at all. I then turned around and looked in the toilet. I had lost my mucus plug. I thought my water had broke. Went to L&D and they told me it was a gush of mucus. They checked me internally numerous times so it caused me to have a lot of contractions all night after that. I was 8 days overdue at that point and du to be induced in 2 days. If you feel any more gushes I would call L&D and let them know. Could be a slow leak.

  • I had a similar incidence at about the same time- 33 weeks or so.  I had enough fluid that it was running down my leg, but when I went in to the doctor, they said it wasn't amniotic fluid.  My OB said it was probably excess fluid because of a vaginal infection and wrote me a antibiotic precription.

If you have any more leakage or other symptoms that you're worried about, trust your gut and get checked out, but I wouldn't stress anymore about the gush you already had.  I didn't have any other incidences after that.

  • Thank you everyone for your replies. I talked to my aunt and she said the same thing happened to her sister with her 2nd baby, and the doctors never figured out what the fluid was.. It made me feel a lot better knowing I wasn't the only one with this issue! I haven't had any more leakage but my back pain is still with me.. I'm guessing that's just another side effect of pregnancy, probably nothing to worry about. I have an appointment on Wednesday, I'm going to ask them to check and see if everything is okay down there. I'm assuming it is since I haven't had any other weird feelings or pains.
