Dental insurance?

Ok, I know, shame on me, we haven't done Lexi's first dental appointment yet. I know she needs a basic checkup this year, but it's enrollment time at DH's work (he's a teacher) and we have to decide whether to add her to his dental. It's $30/month to add her. I'll have to look and see how much it would be to add her to mine, though then we'd have to wait until January to be covered.

And I'm wondering if it's just one (or even 2?) exams, at this point would it be cheaper to just pay out of pocket?? $360/year seems excessive for 4 teeth.

I'm pretty sure it would be cheaper to pay out of pocket. I would call your dentist and ask them. They'll have an approximate value for you for an appt for her.

  • another stupid question...do we need to take her to a pediatric dentist instead of our regular one?

  • I would say not yet....Each exam would only be $170 for an adult with xrays at my dentist.  So, two per year would be $340.  I am not sure, but I don't think they'll be doing xrays for LO, so the cost should be lower. And as long as she doesn't need dental work, there should be no additional costs.  Although, who knows!?!?  Perhaps cassopea can let us know what routine costs are and if our LOs should go once or twice a year.

  • Our dentist said not to add her until she's 3.  Until then they will just do basic checkups and it's cheaper to pay out of pocket.
  • There are offices that give free dental exams to kids under 5.  Maybe that could be an option.

Right now my boys are covered by CHIP because DH's old job didn't offer insurance and I SAH...for now.  So dental is automatically covered.

I also refused to take DS1 to a dentist before he was 2 because he had only gotten his first tooth the day before his birthday and had 6 teeth when he turned 2.  DS2, however, has 8 teeth so I'll probably just suck it up and take him.

  • I'd pay out of pocket.  I know I've seen places like Comfort Dental offer specials for pretty cheap only for those without insurance.  I think like $20 for the first exam.
  • I'm late on this one but I would definitely just pay out of pocket.  I charge much less for an infant exam than I do for an older child so it shouldn't be even close to $360 for this year.

I see you are in Texas and there are a TON of pediatric dentists there - so I'm sure you can find one that won't charge you a ton for a first visit.

ETA: Honestly, unless your child needs dental work down the road, if you are just going for well visits, $30/month is pretty steep.  I would hold off as long as you can. Even if she does have trauma or needs dental work, for children, the costs aren't generally that high (it's not like medical bills that can be catastrophic).
