Not flaming because most people are not aware of this, but as a pediatric RN, please, DO NOT FEED YOUR CHILD POPCORN UNTIL AT LEAST THREE YEARS OF AGE!!!!!! I can't even count on my hands how many times I've cared for toddlers in the hospital who had to have their throats cut open to have the popcorn surgically removed. Sorry if that is graphic, but it is the truth. There is a reason you are warned not to do it.
Stepping off my soap box, just looking out for your kids based on real experience. Carry on.
Re: PSA regarding the popcorn FFFCs
Really? Why? Never heard this before so I am just curious.
ETA: How/Why does it get stuck in their throat?
What is hull-less popcorn? Just the white fulffy stuff with ho hard shell???
I guess google is my friend but FYI: "All popcorns have hulls, because popcorn must have a hull in order to pop. There are varieties of popcorn that have less noticeable hulls in the final popped popcorn, but there are no varieties that are completely hull-less"
This exactly...I knew no popcorn, but wasn't sure for how long.
maybe she means popcorn like the O-KE-DOKE corn puffs.
Bottom line: it is a major choking hazard, and you just can't cut popcorn up into little pieces like you can with a hotdog or a carrot. Think of how when you are eating it, it can kind of get inhaled and stuck. Kids lack the ability to control this. From the AAP: https://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/toddler/nutrition/Pages/Unsafe-Foods-for-Toddlers.aspx.
I feed my kids Pirates Booty or generic Pirates Booty all the time. Great alternative.
I don't know where she gets it but she said it didn't have the seed attatched

I haven't hopped in the FFFC post in awhile so I didn't see any of this, but I did know no popcorn for awhile, I just didn't know when. I've had to remind DH to be super careful when eating his White Cheddar popcorn. A few weeks ago I found some on the floor and started freaking out because I guarantee if Ty'd seen it he'd try to eat it.
We are huge fans of Pirate's Booty in our house. Carter loves it! And DH and I munch down, too.
Excellent, thanks for posting! I stand corrected; no popcorn until FIVE years old.
Five damn?!
::::runs off to google pirates booty:::::
Soooo good. We buy it from Costco! Plus it's hilarious to hear my toddler ask for it by name.
Same here. Popcorn still scares me. And I barely eat it so there's not reason i would give it to DD.
The following are examples of unsafe foods for toddlers.
Ummm, so tonight at dinner, Em had broccoli salad. It had raw carrots and sunflower seeds. And then I let her munch on a stick of celery but watched her really closely for that one. I've also let her have a whole green bean to eat before. I feel awful! And DH and I snack on popcorn all the time, I know he's going to want to give her some. I'm also now worried about leaving her with grandparents who think they can get away with anything because of that title...
I give raw veggies including those listed, but she is always closely supervised and I don't cut them up- easier for her to handle and she bites off pieces. She has had shredded carrot in a broccoli slaw. She also gets large chunkc because we do BLW.
I say you know your child's eating abilities and some things on that list are a judgement call. Popcorn or nuts or round hot dog pieces- no. Those are a pretty universal danger. But I think some of our kiddos handle raw fruits and veggies just fine. We'll know when they're ready for the other stuff, too.
Thanks for the PSA!
The best snack on Earth. They are like cheese puffs, but are white cheddar, and for some reason are healthier.

I'm really glad you posted this. I had no idea how unsafe this was. I haven't ever given him popcorn, but I love it, so it would probably only be a matter of time.
Thanks again. Really helpful!
