With my first I had a c-section after pushing for 3 hours. They said she couldn't clear my pelvis and I started to swell really bad. So bad that the Dr. said she had never seen a vag*** swell like that! They ended up having to keep me in the hospital for 6 days because I also had an allergic reaction to the surgical tape.
I am pregnant with my second and would like to speak with my Dr. about doing a VBAC. I don't even know if she will let me, but I feel like it's worth asking. My question is...Has anyone experienced that and went on to have a successful VBAC? My fear is that I will end up in the same position and having to go through 2 recoveries all over again...with an infant and a toddler! Thanks
Re: VBAC success??
I think the biggest question you'd have to get answered is what the liklihood of that situation occurring again is. You already know you are allergic to the surgical tape so you can avoid it the next time, but, why wouldn't your DD descend/clear your pelivs? Only due to swelling (also what the cause of the swelling)? Was it positioning?
Typically 70-80% of women can successfully VBAC. So you'll just have to have a conversation with your OB to see what their thoughts are on your situation.
I pushed for 4+ hours with my first before having a c-section. He was OP, and 8 lbs. I had a successful VBAC with my second son - he was 10.5 lbs - and I pushed for two hours.
Position can have a lot to do with having a vaginal delivery! I was never given a hard time about wanting a VBAC, either, so look into other providers if your current one says no. Good luck!
DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)
With my first, she wouldn't descend into the pelvis after ah hour of laboring down and an hour of pushing. Her heart rate kept dropping when I would push so it was off to the c-section. She was OP and only 7lbs.
My VBAC baby had a little trouble clearing the pelvic bone, but I only pushed for an hour and a half with her. She was also OP and 9lbs. I had an awesome nurse who had me pushing in a bunch of different positions to get the baby under the bone.
So even with bad position, I was able to get a baby that was almost 2lbs heavier out. It helps to have a supportive nursing staff while pushing!

With my c/s baby, I pushed for 3+ hours and then had a c/s. He was OP and his head was tilted. He was 7lbs 14oz.
With my VBAC baby, I pushed for only 1 hour and she was 8lbs 7oz!
