Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Reflux babies: how many oz at once and total for day (FF) &how much do they sleep?

My lo has GERD....pretty bad.  Still trying different medications.  He also has MP allergy.  Ever since put on RX formula(unsure if coincidence) he can only tolerate  up to 2oz at a time b/c of his reflux. If takes 3 oz. he spits up a lot.  Also, only eats b/t 13-15 oz/day.  I'm so stressed b/c he's just a little guy.

I consider him a good sleeper (at night) considering the amount of milk he drinks.  He usually sleeps b/t 3 & 5 hr stretch then another 2-3 hrs and then up for the day.  However, he is a HORRIBLE napper.  Takes a 30-45 min nap several times a day(after being awake for 1 1/2 -2 hrs).  I feel if he could consume bigger bottle feeds he would nap for 2 to 3 hours like most babies his age (4 mos on the 12th).  These short naps are killing me.  Are all reflux babies sleeping and eating like this?  Just really looking for some support and hopefully I'm not the only one experiencing this.    I feel so bad for him but understand totally why he can only eat small amounts.

  • I can't speak for anyone else but 4 months is when LO naps went to crap and have t yet improved. He has a Mspi and is on Prevacid solutabs for reflux. He sleeps 3-4 30 minute naps and has since 3 and 1/2 months. Every baby is different and every baby changes constantly. I just don't think it's NOT normal at for months to nap like your LO.

  • I am in the process of doing a partial wean from BF to FF during the day so right now LO gets 3 formula bottles of 5 oz each and 3 BF sessions per day.  My LO keeps fluctuating every couple of weeks with how she naps.  For this week, she is doing four 30-min naps per day so I'm feeling ya on the short naps.

DD2 has reflux, and is on Prevacid 4ml 1 daily. I give her 4-5 6oz bottles and a 4oz bottle right before I go to bed and she sleeps about 7-8hrs straight at night (10hrs total), with 1hr nap in the morning and 2-3hr nap in the afternoon. I would get DS into a GI doctor if you haven't already. I don't see why a 4mo would only be able to keep down 2oz at a time even with reflux. DD2 was on Enfamil AR but it caused a lot of constipation so at 4mo we switched her to a Gentle formula with Oatmeal added to it and that's helped a lot.

    When DD2 was 4mo she was taking a 4.5-5oz bottle 6-7 times a day.

At 1mo DD2 was hospitalized for 3 days due to weight loss because she wasn't keeping down BM, plus my milk supply was really low due to her not nursing well and thrush.

DS is under GI care (for a month now).  We've been through zantac, prevacid and now trying nexium.  He seems to do great the first week he is on the meds but after that symptoms appear to worsen (when they should be improving...doc says to allow at least one week for med to work...this was for prevacid and nexium) .  I'm gonna put in another call tomorrow regarding worsening symptoms when should be improving.  He's still gaining yet very little (1 lb in a month)

According to those that have responded to my post all of their LOs drink way more.  DS simply cannot tolerate more than 2 oz.  It's pitiful.  I feel like I'll never use a "big" bottle for my little guy.

Wow!  I can't imagine the day DS drinks 6 oz at a time....and every 2 hours?  You have a good eater.  Have you ever had probs with eating?  What, if any, meds is your lo taking?  How bad is reflux?  Your post gives me hope.

  • DD takes 4oz formula with 2 tbsp rice cereal 5x/day (roughly every 3.5 hours).  We lessened the oz when we added the cereal (at the pedi's suggestion since DD's reflux is so bad that she stops breathing when the liquid comes back into her throat.  As in, she has turned blue twice.  So while I know the cereal is a choking hazard in our case the benefits outweigh the risks).  DD also takes 1.5ml of Prilosec 2x/day.  She has been STTN since she was 6.5 weeks old.

Braeden has reflux and MSPI so we have him on Elecare formula (he was adopted and I could not induce BM in time) and we have him on Prevacid 2x day.  He drinks 4 ounces of formula with rice and Gelmix thickener every 3 hours and currenly wakes 3-4 times a night.  During the day he takes 1-2 naps in the morning and 1-2 naps in the afternoon.   It really wasn't until this past week however that his naps started increasing in time.  We used to have to do more naps and they were really short (only 30 mins at a time).  Now they are about 1-2 hours at a time).

  • DS couldn't keep anything down and only ate 4oz/24oz day for the longest time.  He's on Axid and switched to Enfamil AR; seems to be the right combo for him.  He's now drinking 7oz 4times a day.  Has 1 long (2 hr) nap a day and sleeps 11hrs at night.

    Good luck!

  • You might also want to consider trying different formula's we went through 5 different ones before we got to the correct one.

  • DD is on Nutramigen AA, 4 oz bottles, 20 oz total, also just started solids. She sleeps at night from about 7pm-7am, and naps every 2 hours for 45 min at a time.
