Get rid of cat??

My FI has always been allergic to my cat & it's getting to where he can't handle it anymore. ?He wants to get rid of her, but no one we know wants a cat. ?She's ~13 years old, so it's not like she is a cute kitten people would want to adopt. ?I'm torn, I love my cat but she really makes FI physically sick. ?WWYD? ?what can I do? ?We fight about this all the time.?

Re: Get rid of cat??

  • I would try to find a new home for the cat. If it were my husband, that's what I would do.

  • Tell him to get on some allergy medications.  The chances of you finding a home for a 13 year old cat are very slim.
  • If he is allergic, what else can u do? Do not bring her to a shelter though. Try and find a close family member to take her and make a deal to pay the vet bills..
  • Allergy meds? I wouldn't be getting rid of my pet of 13 years if he didn't at least try some meds.
  • He refuses to take allergy meds. ?I'm actually allergic too- and have taken meds year round for this reason.

Then I would "refuse" to get rid of my cat. Refusing to take allergy meds is just plain stupid.

  • He could see an allergist and get a serum for shots and feel like a new  person.
  • That's rough. My DH hates my 3 cats, but he's not allergic. We've managed not to fight too much about them, but I can't imagine how we would handle it if he was allergic. GL!?

  • I agree with PP, why should you have to get rid of your cat and have your cat suffer because someone refuses to try meds? It's his fault he's suffering then. Your kitty at age 13 wouldn't know why she was being abandoned all of a sudden. :(

    Ditto this.

If he's not willing to at least give meds a chance, then he can't be too miserable.

Pets are a committment, and if you bring a 13 yr old cat to the shelter, I can guarantee that it will be euthanized. At 13 is when a cat will start to maybe show signs of old age too, so getting a friend or family member to take it may be hard because they might not want to take on vet bills for a very senior pet.

keep the cat, tell the DH to suck it up and take the meds.

  • I think it is very selfish of your FI to expect you to get rid of your cat you have had for 13 years without at least trying meds first.
  • I agree he should try some meds first. But whoever said "pets are a commitment.." umm, marriage isn't?? I think if the fighting is that bad, you have to come to some kind of an agreement.

  • I didn't think of seeing an allergist for a longer term allergy solution. ?Maybe he would go for that. ?

That was me. Yes pets are a comittment, but especially a pet who is probably in its last few years. If he has gone this long with the cat, then he can survive. IMO, it's not much to ask of him to pop some allergy pills. But I'm one of "those" pet people who thinks that a pet is a family member, and you shouldn't give it up for adoption until ALL solutions have been tried first.

I'm allergic to dogs and I have 2! If he's going to be selfish and not even try to be reasonable, I wouldn't either.

  • This was me.  Only it was DH's 12 year old cat. I didn't want him to go to a shelter because I was sure he'd be euthanized. All the no kill shelters in our area won't accept animals that old.  I, however, exhausted all allergy meds and shots.  I'm not a candidate for shots because I'm allergic to too many things.  It did come down to it's me or the cat.  I was so sick all the time, I was going to have to move out of Dh (then Fi's house).  Luckily, my sister agreed to take his cat.

I felt/feel like a horrible person. DH is still sad about his cat. But, I couldn't live with the cat.  However, if your FI won't try allergy meds he's the one being selfish.  I would recommed Zyrtec. It's now OTC and approved for animal allergies.  You only take it once a day. I would take it before bed as it can make you a little sleepy.

Just an FYI there is a new med out called Xyzal by script only though but it's the same as zyrtec without the fatigue.
