Ok, I know, shame on me, we haven't done Lexi's first dental appointment yet. I know she needs a basic checkup this year, but it's enrollment time at DH's work (he's a teacher) and we have to decide whether to add her to his dental. It's $30/month to add her. I'll have to look and see how much it would be to add her to mine, though then we'd have to wait until January to be covered.
And I'm wondering if it's just one (or even 2?) exams, at this point would it be cheaper to just pay out of pocket?? $360/year seems excessive for 4 teeth.
Re: Dental insurance?
There are offices that give free dental exams to kids under 5. Maybe that could be an option.
Right now my boys are covered by CHIP because DH's old job didn't offer insurance and I SAH...for now. So dental is automatically covered.
I also refused to take DS1 to a dentist before he was 2 because he had only gotten his first tooth the day before his birthday and had 6 teeth when he turned 2. DS2, however, has 8 teeth so I'll probably just suck it up and take him.
Thanks for posting this! I was wondering this myself.

BFP!! 8/29/16 --> EDD: 5/11/17....it's a GIRL!!!
I'm late on this one but I would definitely just pay out of pocket. I charge much less for an infant exam than I do for an older child so it shouldn't be even close to $360 for this year.
I see you are in Texas and there are a TON of pediatric dentists there - so I'm sure you can find one that won't charge you a ton for a first visit.
ETA: Honestly, unless your child needs dental work down the road, if you are just going for well visits, $30/month is pretty steep. I would hold off as long as you can. Even if she does have trauma or needs dental work, for children, the costs aren't generally that high (it's not like medical bills that can be catastrophic).
