Need Ideas for Added Fat re: Dairy Allergy

DS has a dairy allergy, and we've started giving him soy milk, which he likes. He still nurses 5x a day, but I'm planning on weaning in the next six months. When he's weaned, how can I make sure that he'll be getting the fat he needs without WCM? I know about olive oil and avocado, but are there any other ways? Thanks!

Re: Need Ideas for Added Fat re: Dairy Allergy

  • Those are my go-to's for good fats. Have you tried googling sources of good fats? Might offer some more ideas. I also do fair amounts of Sun Butter and Almond Butter (DD has peanut allergy).

One of the moms on this board shared a great snack idea: a scoop of almond butter rolled in rice crispies, those make a great snack for fat & protein.

We did a lot of avocado, olive oil and sunbutter.  I would dip cheerios or graham crackers in sunbutter or just give him a spoonful after dinner.  You could also mix ground flax into coconut or soy yogurt if he likes that.  I didn't know much about flax when DS1 was little but I utilize it a lot more now and will with DS2.

Does he eat meat/poultry?  If so, and you are adding avocado and olive oil he should be fine.  DD drinks coconut milk, eats turkey meatballs, chicken, ham, avocado and has been growing like a weed.  She jumped from 12th% to 27th% at her 20 month appt.  I worry more about her getting enough calcium which is harder to source from non dairy products.
