So it looks like Alexander has coxsackie virus (aka, hand, foot and mouth disease)
Here is how we found that out: He had a fever Tuesday, and then a lower one yesterday. It seemed to be going away, but then he had a hard stool with some blood one it at 6 pm last night (of course, after the doctor's office is closed). So I call the emergency line, talk to the dr. and she says that if he still has a fever in the morning, to bring him in. I also notice a small diaper rash last night, but think it's unrelated.
This morning, he wakes up chipper, is playing all morning and has a rectal temp of 99. So I'm like, ok, this is the end of whatever that was, so I go to work. My MIL texts me that he seems fine, appetite fine, has a 99.2 rectal temp. When I get home, I see that he looks fine too. All of a sudden, at 4:30, I look up at him and he has a huge red rash all around his mouth. I go to look at it, and he's burning up. When I take off his pants to take his temp (102.5!) I see he has a rash all over his tush, his legs...and it seems to be spreading the more I look.
So I go to get my phone...and can't find it. We just got rid of our landline to save money. I realize that Alexander took it, and HID IT. So I can't call the pedi...I just stick him in the car and drive there, knowing I only have until 5 when they close AND I don't have an appointment. I get there at 4:55 and they let me see the doctor.
As she is examining him, I see that the rash is now all over his hands and feet. As she's looking, I said, Oh my God, this is Coxsackie, isn't it? Yep.
Anyway. A few questions for you: How long did it take for this to run its course in your LO? Do you think it's still ok if I go to an out of town wedding this weekend or will he be in too much pain and I should stay? If he's acting fine now, is the worst over and all that's left is the rash?
You really deserve a cookie for getting through that one, if you did. I know I deserve something, because I basically had a panic attack while driving to the doctor and was crying the whole way there.
By the way, when i got home, I discovered that he put my phone in the fireplace.
Re: Talk to me about coxsackie...(with a long story attached)
We haven't had a run in with this yet, but my friend's LO has it right now too. She said her DS started out with a 102.5 fever and then later developed a rash on his hands and feet. She didn't even notice the mouth sores until she was at the pedi. It's been a few days and she said he is already seeming better. I think it just has to run its course. Is he eating?
Hope the poor little guy is feeling better soon. And glad you found your phone!
Yes, coxsackie=hand, foot and mouth! Yep, that's exactly what happened to A. He doesn't seem too interested in eating, but is drinking. It does suck!
BTW, I LOVE the new siggy of Griffin!
Oh thank you! figured it was time for a new pic!
I read somewhere that cold milk is supposed to help with the mouth stuff, but he hasn't seemed too interested in it. The only things he'll eat are bread, cheese, and crackers. Oh well? I'm letting him eat whatever he will eat! Hope A feels better soon!
Alexander is drinking a lot if it comes in a bottle...I think it makes him comforted and the cold milk feels good on the sores. So, we're back on the bottle for the next few days. Eh, do what you gotta do.
No wise words here, but just commiserrating with you and A.
Also - way to think fast, mama! Smart & swift trip to the pedi before they close!
oh no, poor A! It sounds like he has it bad!
From what I've learned during our first-hand experience with it is that it really does vary from case to case. DS had a fever for 2 days. The highest was 102 point something rectally. His case was localized to his cheek & inside his mouth. His appetite was affected for about 2 weeks b/s of the sores in his mouth. Personality-wise, though, he was "off" for maybe 3-4 days where he was miserable - crying, not wanting to be held, but then not wanting to be put down, etc. Physically, the infection took about 3-4 weeks to go away.
Hugs all around!
I didn't know that was the technical term for HFM so I of course read the title and thought hmmm this could be a very interesting thread
Hope A feels better soon!
Poor A & G...I hope they feel better soon!
This must be running rampant right now, because both of DH's niece's just had it a few weeks ago. Thankfully, DD did not come down with it and hopefully never will.
Oh no!!!!!!! I echo sofamonkey's sentiments... I'm so sorry but I hope he feels better, and I think that it's adorable he hid it in the fireplace!
Glad you could see a doctor!
