Today is DH and my 4-year anniversary. He's really big into gardening, and the traditional 4-year gift is fruit or flowers, so I kind of stretched that a little and got him a tree. It's a tricolor European birch, which is one we had seen and loved at our wedding reception site. So the garden center delivered it yesterday, and I figured I'd hide it out in our garage until this afternoon.
Only, I grossly underestimated the size and weight of this sucker (it looked so manageable sitting near the other big trees when I bought it). I quickly realized there was no way, pregnant or not, that I'd ever be able to move it from the front step to the garage, and no neigbors were milling about. So, enter the skateboard! Thank goodness DH has this beaten up skateboard from when he was a teen. I set it next to the tree, managed to angle it onto the board and scooted it into the garage, where it's entirely too tall and reaches all the way to the ceiling!
DH has been warned not to enter the garage until I tell him he can. I'm not sure why it didn't occur to me that I might not be able to move this on my own! I hope he loves it.
Re: An anniversary gift I should have planned better, lol
European beech, not birch. This is what the leaves look like:
Your story made me giggle :-) Glad you were able to move it to the garage finally. I love the colors of the leaves.
A while back I decided to dig up the Japaneese Yew that had been growing beside my garage to a place closer to the back yard. I GROSSLY underestimated the weight of a large shrub. It ended up taking 3 people, 2 dollys and a very long back breaking time to move it. Not sure what made me think I could move it by myself :-)
Those plants weigh way more than they look like huh?!?
