2nd Trimester

regurgitation and post nasal drip is making me miserable

I don't have heartburn but everything I eat and drink has been coming back up and my throat has been burning. On top of that I have such bad post nasal drip that I'm swallowing gobs of mucous every 10 seconds or so, making me incredibly nauseous. A zantac helped the regurgitation almost immediately which really helped my sore throat, but the post nasal drip is getting worse. We have a dehumidifier and I'm drinking enough water to drown. I can't do a nasal irrigation (tried it) and can't gargle either. Anybody have any more suggestions to put me out of my misery?

  • Why are you swallowing the mucus? Spit it out. Discretely, of course. I have a permanent post nasal drip, and I have learned the art of the thick paper napkin. Also, milk makes the drip worse... You may have to drink something else to get your calcium. Most of all, get it out. Don't swallow it. For the heartburn, are you using tums? Or can you eat your food in smaller amounts? I know this morning, my glass of milk came back up. So I need to not drink so much at one time.

  • Loading the player...
  • Try an antihistamine such as reactine or claratin for the post nasal drip. mine is terrible due to allergies (cursed springtime) and those two are both ok'd by my ob's office

Try a saline nasal spray, and then take a hot shower. It sounds nasty, but blow your nose as much as possible in the shower. Why are using a dehumidifier (is your home humid)? If not, you want to use a humidifier to keep everything loose and flowing because dry air just makes it all gunky and not come out.

Also, when laying down, keep you head and shoulders elevated above your torso.

Maybe some sort of tea would help? I always like orange spice tea.

    oops I meant a humidifier!

I'll ask my ob about this. I'm not sure if it would help as I don't have any allergies. I did have this problem one time before (before I was preggers) and was given a steroid spray. It worked for a little while until I started having such bad side effects from the medicine I had to stop it. I haven't had any problems since.

I can't spit it out because it's too much. It literally drips down my throat, and it's worse when I'm lying down. And when I say lying down I mean half sitting all propped up with pillows. I may just try to sleep in the recliner tonight to see if it'll help. Thanks everyone!

  • Not sure on your comfort level (i'm very relaxed about things I'm learning ;) )

I take zantac for my acid (my doc actually talked me into because if your acid is bad enough you can do perm damage) - she also mentioned that liquid antacid (so liquid version of tums for instance) often works better then regular tums.

Snot during pregnancy unfortunatly is common :(  However - I only have post nasal drip with allergies - my doc and allergist have approved Zyrtec and its class B (so of course always ask your own OB with any drugs) and its a great anti histimine.  I believe you should not take and allergy drugs with D (but I'm not a doc ;) )

I've been VERY lucky that my horrid allergies are GONE with the pregnancy :)  But the allergy season thsi year has been extremely bad - and I've had to dose a few times.
