Clothing sizes

Before having a baby I was totally oblivious to the fact that a baby does not always wear the size that matches their age.  Once I found out I was having a boy I stocked up on seasonally appropriate clothes in the size that the baby would be during that season.  Now Charlie seems to be zooming through the sizes! He wasn't in 0-3 months for that long, and now wears 6 month size Carter's clothes.  I have given up on buying clothes ahead of time because I am not sure if he will eventually stall out in one size longer. Then, i was lurking on the Dec. 11 board and saw this post https://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/66265972.aspx and now I am even more nervous about the flying through clothing sizes that is in the near future. Makes me not want to buy any clothes!

Luckily, so far DS is wearing the size he 'should' be in. I've bought so many things for the future and I'm nervous he won't be able to wear them when the time comes.

  • So far, Ben has been pretty close to his sizes.  I have started re-thinking how I buy some things.  Like onesies with designs: I am buying mostly short sleeve.  They can be worn on their own when it's warmer and layered with a long sleeve onesie when it gets cooler out.  You can get packs of long sleeves relatively cheap, so it saves a little money.  Trying to figure out seasons and sizes is no fun!

  • To make it even more fun all the brands fit differently and some times the brands aren't even consistent.. Example, the lines that Gymboree sells may not all fit the same.  I hate buying online because of this, I like to shop in the store.

I've been doing this too. I had no clue I'd end up with a 4 pound 13 ounce baby when I got home from the hospital so there was a mad rush to buy a bunch of newborn clothes after he was born.. Lol. He's just now getting into his  3-6 month clothes so thankfully I stocked up on that size for summer!

Has anyone else noticed that Baby Gap runs big? I feel like it runs bigger than most other brands.

Baby Gap may run big, but as soon as I put it in the wash, it shrinks big time, and not width-wise, just length-wise. Not good for a baby with long little legs. None of the other brands I've gotten have shrunk like this.

  • i was thinking this today.  DS is just going to be 3 months next week and he is outgrowing some of his 3-6 month clothing.  Much of the carters 6 month stuff is getting small.

I bought a few  6-9 pieces in advance and they are all fall things.  I don't think he has any summer stuff in 6-9.... oh well I guess I need to go shopping!

The Carter's people just want to mess with us.  I finally just adjusted to the fact that they use the end age range for their size.  So, what other lines call 3-6 months, they call 6 months; for 6-9 months, they use 9 months; and so on.  I almost order all the wrong size for DS.  Thank goodness I stopped and looked at their size chart!

Which - speaking of - almost all of the clothing websites have size charts that tell you size by height and weight.  I have found those super helpful!  More than once I have adjusted what size to buy based on the measurements instead of the age range.

I'll have to check those out! I never noticed them before..

Yes  this exactly!! ds' size is all over the place, some 0-3 will still fit him while others wont, but then a 6-9 will fit him in other brands! and its not like hes big, hes only 25 inches and 16 lbs. we just decided to use everything we recieved at the baby shower and if ever we need to buy something for special occassion or something else we will just buy an outfit for him before hand! i refuse to buy super early and then it doesnt fit!!

I've always thought that Baby Gap runs small. That being said - Eowyn is now wearing 9 month sizes in Carters and she is NOT a chunkster being less than 14 pounds). I think she is tall with her Daddy's long torso.

DS1 was always spot on with sizes but DS2 is flying through them!  He's already heading into 9 month Carter's.  We have really nice consignment stores around here so I'm just buying as I need it.  I did the same as you, OP, when i had DS1.  I scoured clearance racks and always had seasonally appropriate clothes in the size he "should" be in.  Thankfully he matched up!

  • H will be 16 weeks old on Monday and she's about 12lbs, 23in long. She currently wears Carters 3mo size, and 0-3mo size at Gap and Janie & Jack. (those are the 3 stores we primarily have clothes from).

From our showers, we have a ton of summery clothes in 6 and 9mo sizes, but I haven't washed any of it yet and it all still has tags. I plan to go make some exchanges in the next couple weeks, because we have a little peanut! I'm grateful in a way though, because assuming she stays on the smaller size, I bought her a beautiful wool peacoat from Janie & Jack on clearance for $25 in 6-12mo size. It says it will fit up to 22lbs, and since their stuff does run bigger, I think it'll be good!

  • Luckily my kids both seemed to wear the size that is stated.  Except at birth DS was in newborn for about 3.5 weeks and DD in preemie for a week and then newborn for a while.  I hadn't planned on those!  But DD is 4 months now and in the size 6 months (which is 3-6 months)....so just right.  I forsee her being in the same as the tag for the most part like my DS.

The little girl that I watch though has always been bigger and just turned 3 years old and is now in size 4's and some 5's!

That's crazy my LO was exactly 4 lbs. 13 oz. when we came home too!  We had to run out and buy preemie clothes because nothing fit! He's also just starting 3-6 month.  He's short though so a lot of one piece things are long on him.  He seemed to catch up so fast though that I'm wondering if he will surpass where he is "supposed" to be? I also have a lot of clothes for fall in the 9 month range and hope they will fit!

  • this is funny because me and my sister were talking about this yesterday.

My DD is small, she is still wearing newborn or 0-3 month clothes, at 3 months. All of the summer clothes are big on her, luckily most of her summer clothes are dresses, so they are just a little long and the diaper covers dont fit. I have tons of cute shorts/skirts that dont fit.

My neice is the opposite, she is 8 months old, wearing 12-18 month clothes and sometimes 24 month clothes in some brands.

My sister is passing down my neices clothes as she grows out of them so I am hoping the seasons match for DD.
