Chronic pain & hypermobility

Does anyone else here suffer from hypermobility? I read that it could create problems during pregnancy, but didn't experience anything worse than SPD (which sucked, but I could still function) during my last pregnancy.

This time, however, my entire body is out of whack. My feet, legs, back, shoulders, neck, head...they are all in pain. Im tense everywhere, and it's creating spasms and migraines. Nothing I've tried (tylenol, caffeine, massage, baths) helps with the pain. A chiropractor is out of the question, as popping joints actually creates more tension with hypermobility. I'm at my wit's end, though. I'm crying all the time because of this pain, and I honestly don't know how I'm going to last 5 more months. Also, I start a new job next week, so I need to be able to function physically.

How do any of you deal with chronic pain during pregnancy?

Re: Chronic pain & hypermobility

  • funny you should mention this.

I have a VERY hypermobile SI joint and when I was running it was really driving me crazy.

Well now it is again too- it causes me piriformis, hip and leg pain. I thought I was going to faint last night

I don't have a solution. Acupuncture has helped in the past but has become cost prohibitive to me lately.

  • I deal with hypermobility too. So far my lower back (where most of my pre-preg trouble was) and my neck are bothering me the most. But I also have pain in my hips and upper back now. I had such a bad 4 day long migraine with severe vision loss that I was in ER. I've found that if I resist the urge to crack my neck/back and do some sort of pilates/yoga every other day or so I can keep it in check. I still feel it everyday though.

I'm definitely going to look into acupuncture. About how much does that cost? I need to look for a physical therapist, too, I think.

Good idea about resisting the urge to pop! I have been fighting the urge all day long, and it's torture, hehe. But I've heard that before - if you stop doing the things that provide temporary (and very brief) relief, your muscles will have the chance to relax on their own. I've also heard that yoga is bad for hypermobility, but Pilates is good. Not sure how true that is... It seems like yoga stretches would help.

Kailey, what were they able to do in the ER?? Last night was so bad, I was begging DH to take me there, but I was just there the night before (totally unrelated, thought I had a blood clot) and we couldn't afford another trip of they wouldn't be able to do much anyway.

  • I feel like yoga stretches my tight muscles that pull things out of place and pilates helps strengthen my weaker muscles that help hold everything in place.

In the ER they gave me a cocktail of basically anti-hystimines, zofran, nubane, and i think an anti-inflammatory. Zofran was for nausea and nubane was for the pain. The anti-h/i seemed to help relieve some of the pressure and helped my vision return, which helped break the headache. It only helped a few hours, and I was back at my GP the next day to do a CT. GP Rx'd another anti-h and Tylenol-3, lots of water and lots of rest. That took care of it. Felt so guilty taking painkillers though, but I couldn't eat I felt so bad before.

Okay, good to know. Thanks! :) I tried taking Benadryl last night to help with the pressure, but puked it up. Next time I feel a migraine coming on, I'm taking my butt down to urgent care. I feel like utter crap today, like I'm hungover from yesterday's migraine. Still can't eat. :( As soon as I feel better, I'll give that yoga/pilates regimen a shot!

  • Ugh. Hate migraine hangovers. GL and hope you feel better soon!

  • I have neck injuries from a car accident and that I never healed from likely because of my severe hyper mobility. My last pregnancy was pre-accident and while I remember having weird joint pains it was never anything compared to what I'm going through now.  I do PT, accupuncture and massage weekly. My OB also has me under the care of a pain management doctor who treats pregnant women. As far as exercise, I've been told that water aerobics are really the best for hyper mobility in pregnancy. I'm not really allowed to do anything else besides that and walking. (sorry for the lack of paragraphs, bumping from my phone).

  • I have been told I have hyper mobile joints and so I started seeing my chiropractor.

BEFORE YOU STOP READING  - he is a NUCCA chiropractor which means he makes SMALL adjustments in my upper neck to allow my body to reposition.  He does not do 'cracker backer' as I call it ;)

I have no idea how my hyper mobility compares to anyone elses.. I've just been told - I can tell you this - my main symptom prior to pregnancy was my hip pain - I have had next to none since I've been seeing my chiro.

https://www.nucca.org/ is the website - if you are local to seattle area I see Dr. Fryer at the balanced spine (https://thebalancedspine.com/) and I have also found that he will recommend other drs in other areas.  I had seen him before pregnancy - but had stopped for other reasons.  I had a duola recommend him (and she has patients that driver over an hour to see him) - so I went back.  I'm VERY glad I have.
