2nd Trimester

Hip Pain

A few times now in the middle of the night I have been woken up by hip pain on one side.  Last night it was so bad I had to get out of bed and walk around to try to loosen it up.  Is there anything I can do to prevent this pain or exercises that should lessen the pain?

Re: Hip Pain

  • I had this really bad in my 1st pregnancy - not as much with this one, but I started doing the following early so that may be why.

I bought a pregnancy wedge pillow for under my belly. I put a pillow between my thighs and one or two pillows under my head.

Prenatal yoga!!! Works great for achy joints.

  • Stretching works wonders. I stretch before bed and when i wake up (sometimes thats in the middle of the night) and so far it seems to have helped a lot. Ive been experiencing this since around 24 weeks and my OB told me to plan on it increasing in discomfort. Talk to your OB about it and she can also recommend things as well. I know this is painful, GL!

I've been having the same problem for a few weeks now. The maternity pillow doesn't really help me, I try to stretch throughout the day and when it gets bad I walk around until it's comfortable enough for me to go back to sleep. A coworker suggested a maternity belt during the day, you can get them at Motherhood Maternity for as little as $20. Good luck!

I've been having the same issue. I have a wedge to use under my belly, but the past two nights I've been positioning it under my hip and it has helped a ton! I have also been stretching a bit more which may be helping as well.

  • Not sure where you are feeling it.. the side of your hip?  (If so my 'fix' for this was to put my feet up on top of my pregnancy pillow so it created a weird angle?  HIps on the bed - both feet on top of each other on the pillow.  IF its in the front of your hip (more common with me for weird reasons) - a good stretch (probably for either) is to lie on the bed, bring one leg to your chest (bent of course) - hold it with your arms - like hug it, and then dangle the other off the bed.  then switch.  - you can also stand up in a lunch position and tilt your pelvis forward (you'll feel it)

I've heard pillow between the knees, some find more relief with a pillow between the ankles.  Good luck!  I haven't had any in a few weeks (so thats another thing maybe it will pass?)

  • Depends on what type of pain...

I was getting hip pain in the middle of the night when i would try to lay on my side...I was in a hotel for the majority of my first trimester and when I finally got home into a cushy bed I haven't had the same problem since.

The other hip pain I got was from walking.  Not power walking, not walking with poor footwear, just walking around a track.  I was in pain for several days after that.  And I bellydance three times a week and don't experience any kind of pain from dancing.  My best guess is that it has something to do with the posture, and that while dancing we correct our posture to have more of a straight spine, and when we walk we naturally have a curve to the spine, and maybe  it stresses the hip more?
