So I feel a little funny asking this question but am asking anyway for the sake of my health and the health of my baby... I am currently 18 weeks pregnant and about 2 weeks ago we found out my dog contracted Kennel Cough. For some reason I thought kennel cough was not contagious to humans and went on as normal. I have been coughing A LOT since this past weekend and today I read a post about whooping cough and noticed that the medical term is "bordetella (something or other)" and kennel cough is also medically known as "bordetella (something or other)". Shocked, I started to google (always a bad idea) and found out that kennel cough can be contagious to humans especially if you have a weakened immune system. I have already left a message at my doctor's office asking if I need to come in to find out if I indeed have whooping cough, get antibiotics or a vaccine, but I am wondering if anyone here has had experience with whooping cough while pregnant and if everything turned out okay? TIA
Re: Kennel / Whooping Cough?
Whooping cough = pertusis
You could maybe get kennel cough from your dog, but it's extremely rare. I guess call your doctor if you are concerned.
...baby #3 is here...
This, I would talk to your ob if you are worried.
I don't have any experience with this but I thought I would add that this may be a good opportunity for you to ask your Dr. their opinion on you & close family getting the whooping cough vaccination anyway.
Mine was all for it so I've had mine and my dh & our parents will be getting it as well.
I told my In Laws I wanted them to get the vaccine, they asked their doctor who told them it was a waste of time. "Unless they came into contact with a child that had it, they wouldn't get it" And my response was how the heck are they going to know if they come in contact with a child who has it?! Ugh, I would like to call that doctor and give him a piece of my mind.

Kennel cough and whooping cough are in the same genus (different species) of bacteria. It is possible to contract kennel cough from your dog, especially if they have a particularly mutated strain. Now that being said, even if you contracted kennel or whooping cough right now, they would just treat symptoms and put you on antibiotics. I was exposed to whooping cough earlier in my pregnancy and thought nothing of it after speaking to my OB. If you have a cough, I would see your GP and get treated. Coughing can be harmful if you are straining or coughing often. Good luck!
Update: The nurse from my OB's office called back and confirmed that you can in fact contract kennel cough from dogs and said that if the cough starts out mucousy and turns dry, it's likely that you (I) contracted it but if it starts out dry and turns mucousy it could be allergies. So her suggestion was to take an allergy med and see if the cough goes away and if it gets worse, to go in and get antibiotics.
I have an appointment with my OB next week and will definitely be asking about the whooping cough vaccine and will be mentioning it to our families as well.
Thanks for all of your suggestions/help!
Wow...especially considering that a person with pertussis is contagious long before symptoms even show up.
I don't typically pretend to know more than someone who actually WENT to medical school, but he should know better. My family is irritated that they have to get the shot, too, but it's my hospital's requirement.
