Babies: 6 - 9 Months

anyone else skip sippy cups?

My LO is mostly breastfed, but I try to give her a bottle here and there just in case someone else would need to feed her.  She has been able to hold a bottle for some time now, but she isn't good about tipping it back on her own.  What I have read about sippy cups led me to think about not using them, so I decided to an Avent cup with a straw since she won't have to tilt her head to drink.  Much to my surprise, she does really well with it so far.  She has had to have some prune juice lately, and she has had milk from it too.  Does anyone else do this as well, and do you have ay preferable cups with straw brands?

Re: anyone else skip sippy cups?

  • my son only used straw cups. I tried about 5 different sippy's and he never "got it" so in desperation i finally tried a straw and he loved it.  he was in Early Intervention for his speech around 18m and they were happy that he used straws because they're finding it's better for their speech.

  • I guess I'd always just called straw cups sippy cups, or really any cup that doesn't spill all over if on its side is a sippy in my book.  So yes, ds wouldn't use sippys for a long time, he would only use straw cups.

  • Sippy cups are frustrating for DD.  She has to suck so hard to get anything out.  I haven't tried a sippy straw cup because they say for 12+ months but she loves drinking from a regular cup and straw.  Might have to skip sippy cups just because they don't work for her.

  • I've been trying to give DD a sippy but she isn't really fan of it. But she LOVES drinking from my cup and even drank from my straw once so I have been thinking of getting her a straw cup.

  • My DS1 is in speech therapy and his therapist told us that sippy cups (the non-straw ones) are pretty much bottles and that straw ones are best for making the muscles around the mouth stronger.  We switched him over to the straw ones and plan on introducing DS2 to straw ones only.

  • I must be out of the loop, i've never heard sippy cups are bad for babies. DD just started using one a few days ago and got the hang of it right away, but she already will sip out of a regular cup if i let her. guess i'll be looking more into this and the straw things!
