Looking for tips on starting new business

I have an idea for a new business, but I don't know where to start. I?ve always wanted to do something on my own, and I feel like the time is right but I have no idea how to get started.

I'd also love feedback on my idea to see if it's good or not (be honest!), It's basically to start a local organization that encompasses my town and surrounding local towns. It's like a mom's group but two things make it different. One: it is ONLY for working parents. Two: it would have stuff for parent sof kids ages birth to 18. There is a well-established parent group in my town, most working parents around me don't joint the local mom's group because all the events are during the week, and it is really geared towards kids only up to age 6. It would be a membership-based group, and would offer services such as: seminars on issues pertaining to working parents, opportunities to form carpool/emergency backup care swaps; fairs such as summer camp fair, preschool and daycare fairs, so that people can view all their options in one place, family events held on weekends, etc. etc.

I?d love to hear your opinions on this idea, and what YOU would want in such an organization, And any advice on how to get started, and especially how to find a partner would be great - I know that I want and need a partner - I am great at some aspects, like administrative stuff and event planning, but other aspects that will be important are skills that I don't have (like sales and marketing). Plus, I really need to motivation of having someone else to bounce ideas off of.

Thanks!

  • thanks - I gues I wasn't clear - it wouldn't be a place for people to go - it would be like  a "mom's club", so there would be a website and events planned, but not like an actual building like a community center

I like the idea, but I'm not sure I would pay to be a part of it. It would be nice if you incorporated daycare information/reviews as well. I see it more as a website where working parents can go for resources. Then you could get advertisement to pay for it instead of members paying.

I think this would be a great first step.  Establish an online community, venture out into meetings and then, if there is enough interest and involvement, you can go the route of renting out space for something more permanent.  But then again, if this is exclusively for working parents, you'd have an empty building during the day.

Love the idea, I find myself struggling to find solutions to some things that only working parents face. My only concern for your business plan is how you would actually make money. Events, marketing etc. will cost a lot and I don't think you could charge enough in membership fees to have that be your complete revenue source. In order to offer good enough services for people to pay, I think you'll need to sell a significant amount of advertising. I think you'll need to first build the community with a free or very low cost membership and once you have a big enough group you can start marketing that following to key advertisers allowing them to sponsor events and run ads on your website.

Be choosy about the advertisers so they are surely something that fits your demographic and will benefit your members. I think its great, but be prepared to do a LOT of work before you see any monetary return from something like this.
