Comment from first grade student...

So, I know I shouldn't feel sad, but I do.  I also know that you are not supposed to have "favorite students" as a teacher...I love all of my students, but I do have a favorite.  She is always super sweet, and she's teeny tiny due to her disability (I teach Special Education).

Anyway, this student came into my room today, and said, "why is your belly still fat?"  I know that she didn't mean it the way that I've apparently taken it.  She was just genuinely curious b/c the baby is no longer in my belly.  She said it very innocently, but I'm still really sad.  I've lost all of my baby weight + 5 extra lbs, but the distribution of my weight is different (so I still have a belly).  I can't say that I've been working really hard to get rid of the weight, but I haven't been sitting around doing nothing either.  I've always figured, "9 months on, 9 months off", so I figured I still have some time to get rid of it.  It just hit me kind of hard this morning.

Yesterday and this morning were not the best, so I was already not in a happy mood.  So, thanks for letting me get this out...I know it might be stupid, but I feel like crying. :(

Re: Comment from first grade student...

  • Oh I can totally relate, my clients whom I work with also have disabilities. They were all super curious about the baby when I was pregnant. When I returned I had a lady who I work with come up to me and rub my belly and talk to the baby. I explained to her that I wasnt pregnant anymore and I had the baby. I showed her pictures ect. I know she didnt mean any harm, but it still hurt my feelings.

    Dealing with the changes that have come with having a baby is MUCH harder than I ever imagioned it to be....nothing about my body is the same and it is hard to swallow. Even worse when I have been working super hard to lose the wieght and taking away precious time with DD to hit the gym...and I still feel horriable about my post baby body.

    You are not alone!  If gaining weight and feeling fat was ever worth it, having sweet DD is totally worth it but doesnt make it easier!

  • I know how you feel. I teach third grade and my students have told me "you look like your having another baby." I had to explain to them that after having a baby our tummy looks different from holding a baby for such a long time. I had to address it because my students made comments about it all the time and it started to get to me.

  • I teach Grade 2 and some of their comments catch me off guard as well.  I'm not back at work yet, but with the extra hormones, lack of good sleep and sensitivity towards my post-pregnancy body, I'd take that comment hard too!

    Like you, I've lost all my pregnancy weight, but still have this "doughy pooch" of belly fat at the front.  I haven't tried hard to get rid of it either, but it's the only thing left to go.

    On the other hand, my arms look fabulous!  Lugging a 16 pounder around and then bouncing/rocking him to sleep for naps and bedtime have made my biceps toned and somewhat sculpted. ;)

    So sorry that comment got to you on an already bad day.  {{BIG HUGS}}

  • I've also lost all my pregnancy weight and still have a belly, too! Don't feel too sad because there are those of us who are right there with you :) My husband's aunt told me this past weekend that I had an excuse because I just had a baby. Then I turned around and told her that I was already back to prepregnancy weight. Our bodies still need time.

  • You just have to love your students' blunt honesty.

    Your story reminded me of something one of my third graders said right before I had my baby.  He asked, "Um, so when are you going to go to the hospital to pick up your baby?"  Apparently he had NOT noticed my huge stomach nor did he understand anything about where babies come from.  I wish having a baby was just that easy!

    Ah I'm sorry! Just like everyone else, I'm 1 lb away from pre-preg weight but I still have a pooch. I hate when DH teases me about it, even though he thinks its innocent fun.

    Also, to go along with this theme...At the beach on Saturday one of DH's friends said to me (while I was holding Colt) "Look at the veins in his head. They look just like the veins in his Mommy's boobs!"

    WHO SAYS THAT? I'm so self conscious about the way my boobs look now. They're enormous and have these deep purple and blue veins. Bah!
