Silly Question re: Diaper /Feeding Times

LO is EBF and eats every 2-3 during the day, with maybe a 4 hours stretch at night. When he wakes to feed, he's always wet/poopy, and he already has a diaper rash, so I change him so he doesn't sit in it for the 45min it takes to eat. Then, we poop while eating, so I change him again. He HATES being changed, so even if he was sound asleep he wakes up and thrashes. He nearly always pees on himself during a change, despite having a wet diaper already. Then because he's awake and angry I have to nurse him again, which makes him poo again and the cycle starts over. We're spending 1.5 hours feeding and changing each cycle. Plus, I'm going through about 3 diapers each changing. What am I doing wrong?

Re: Silly Question re: Diaper /Feeding Times

  • Nothing. Some babies are just like that. DD was the same way. She pooped SOOO much, her stool was yellow before we left the hospital. I went through a LOT of diapers in the first few weeks. It settled down later. The cold air is what is making him pee. You can try a wipey over his winky.

Unless DD was dirty, a wet diaper wasn't changed until after feeding. Two things here. 1) add Greek yogurt to your diet. It will cross through the breast milk and might help make his stools less acidic. 2) once or twice a day, let him just lay naked on a towel. That will air out his dangly bits and help with the diaper rash.

  • Thanks, I'll try more yogurt. I eat it about every other day. When I change I put a wipe over him, but it's not absorbent, so it still gets all in his creases. Then I have to try to dry him again because of the rash. And naked butt time results in completely liquid poo shooting over a foot out of his bottom across the chucks pad. We take lots of baths.
  • His stools shouldnt be completely liquid. They should be like fancy mustard in color, texture and consistency. There's a reason BF mama's say baby sh*t mustard yellow. If they're that loose, put a call in to your pedi.
  • He was jaundiced so we've already been there 3 times at 10 days old. She saw it in his diaper and was not concerned. I told her it was completely liquid when it comes out, not pasty. It's still seedy though.

My girl likes to poop in stages. First in the diaper she's wearing, then in a fresh one bc, well, she wants to and then sometimes a third for good measure. hahaha

  • Sophie was like that the first week and a half, but it's gotten loads better. She used to poop12-15 times a day, now it's more like 2-3. So, the cure for us was just time. The diaper rash makes the changes worse. I assume you're letting him dry a bit and using a diaper rash cream of some kind? Good luck :)

  • The pedi asked me to switch to disposables until the rash is gone and his cord falls off. We are using A+D at each change and I blow dry his bum to make sure he's dry.

My LO is a poop machine.  It's constant I swear.  I will change him and then go goes soon after.  And he almost always poops while I am BF'ing him so I think this is all normal.

I don't know if the stools you are talking about are normal or not being so liquidy.  DS's are not thick but yellow, seedy, and loose.  I wouldn't say it's liquid though.

  • There is probably not much you can do but an elimination diet might help. I'd start with eliminating dairy and soy from your diet and see if it helps. I'd also try and see if I could see another ped in the practice for a second opinion. Good news is all that pooping should get rid of the jaundice.

  • How old is your LO? At about 4/5 weeks our girls stopped pooping like 8 times a day and would go 3-4 days in between BMs I was freaking out about this but doc says BF babies usually only go once a week. So it should start slowing down for you in regards to pooing, peeing not so much. I know nothing about boys considering I have 3 girls! I also LOVE the aveeno diaper rash cream. It doesn't smell like desitin does and usually cures things almost immediately. Something to look into anyways. Have you tried different diapers, he may be a little sensitive tot he brand you are using?

  • He's 10 days. We were using cloth when he got the rash. He seems like a rash-y little guy in general, which I expected since DH and I both have tons of allergies, asthma and eczema.
  • I just read this post to my husband.  I could have written the EXACT same thing.  We average 3 to 4 diapers a changing, 2 to 3 outfits a day, and 2 pjs at night.  His poo is pretty much liquid also with some grainy pieces in it.  I also brought it up to our pediatrician and she said welcome to life with a newborn!

  • Wouldn't it be nice if they pooped/peed in the same diaper and were done? I don't think you are doing anything wrong...

We try (I repeat try) to change, swaddle, and feed during the night. It works for the most part to keep LO calm and put them back to sleep. Do you feed while your LO is swaddled? Perhaps try that. However more times than not by the time I am done she poops or pees and I have to un-swaddle, change, and re-swaddle.
