My husband and I really like the name Elliott. Last name rhymes with Lynch. We don't like the nickname Eli, but think the nickname Leo could be really cute..though not necessarily with our last name.
We could always do Joseph as a middle name, and nickname EJ. Not sure why we can only keep thinking of what the nickname will be, probably because we doubt people will call him his full name Elliott - perhaps I am overthinking...
Question though, is Elliott becoming too popular? I don't want our kid to be one of 10 in his class.
Re: Elliott too popular?
No, Elliott is not very popular. It is the #371 name in Massachusetts (Elliot is #285 and Eliot is #421). I think that Elliot Joseph is a fine name.
However, I think Elliot nn Leo is a little strange. Those two names don't seem connected to me, either in their origins or their sound. Besides, Leo is way, way more popular in our area than Elliott (#103 and twice as popular as the national average). If you like Leo, I'd go with that (or Leon/Leonardo/Lionel, etc.).

I LOVE the name Elliott!
I know 1 and he is in his mid-30s. He's a very good guy. I like Elliott more than Tanner.
He doesn't go by a nn, but if he does, it's his wife who calls him "El"

A girl I went to hs with has a daughter named Elliott. I don't care for it as a girl's name.
I do think of ET, but that is not a bad association. I cannot think of any other Elliotts, so that might be good.
I know an Elliot and his older than my parents, a very nice gently humble man though I might add.
I taught school for a bit, Elem age, and I never had an Elliot pass through. But is oklahoma... Def not a common name around here. I hear it more for a last name than anything.

First of all, my DH (who is named Elliott James) thanks you for considering this as a BOY name!
FWIW, I don't think it's "too popular" at all. I work in a Children's Hospital and have never, in seven years, taken care of an Elliott. As for nicknames with this name, most people will probably just call him Elliott, but I often shorten it to El or you could use EJ I guess.
I agree with what a PP said - he probably won't have to go by Elliott J. or whatever, but there will be others out there. It's climbing, but not even top 100 yet. I know 2 that I can think of. One is my age (25ish) and the other is young, around a year old. Neither go by nicknames (and the younger one is Elliot, can't remember which way my old classmate spelled it, both spellings are fine).
And about this "turning into a girl's name", I don't think it will. I realize it has entered the top 1000 for girls now, but it's a boy name, all the way. There are girls out there with all sorts of boy names (I know a Kevyn, Ryann, Devin, Kyle, and some other girls with names I consider all boy). The reason it "becomes a girl's name" is because people for some reason decide that because one person knows one girl with the name, they can't use it for the correct sex anymore. Don't let it scare you off at all.
