How do you prepare for a 1 hour glucose test?

How do you prepare for a 1 hour glucose test, if you can prepare that is? I haven't been scheduled for one yet, but I am just wondering, because I am sure that I will have one here very soon?

Thank you Ladies!

Re: How do you prepare for a 1 hour glucose test?

  • Your doctor will tell you exactly what to do. I did the 2 hour and I had to fast for 12 hours before, so I planned the test first thing in the morning. That was about it!

Just go in prepared with a water bottle (sips to take the glucose drink taste out of your mouth) and something to do for an hour!

I scheduled mine for first thing in the morning and just made sure to not have anything too carb-y or sweet for breakfast. I made some southwestern egg beaters with a little cheese and drank only water. You don't need to fast, according to my OB, and I passed with flying colors. GL!

  • I never had to fast for the 1 hour.  Dr just said not to have a sweet or carb filled meal (pancakes with syrup for breakfast) kind of thing and you will be fine.  Bring something to entertain yourself for an hour in the waiting room. =o)

    Good luck

  • I'm doing the hour glucose test in a few weeks. It'll be in the morning. My ob/gyn just told me no not eat anything 2 hours before the test but I could have water all the way up until the test.

Definitely bring something to read or do for the hour you'll have to wait. I forgot to do that with DS1 a few years ago and was bored out of my mind... just kept watching the minutes slip by on the timer they gave me.

  • i'm doing mine next week, first thing in the am.  only thing doc said to change was to have a good protien breakfast (eggs) and not do my usual bowl of cereal.  basicly just not do a bunch of carb intake right before the test (milk, bread etc)

To make it easier, I just scheduled it in the morning and didn't eat anything except I had some water. The OB said I could actually eat just to avoid things that were sugary. There's not much to prepare for. It's really no big deal. People tend to hype it up a lot.

Mine is non-Fasting. My dr never even said anything about doing anything before hand. But I think I will take up the advice of non-sugary meal before going. And going in the morning sounds like a good idea. I don't have to make an appt just show up. Yay!!

  • My midwives give your the syrup at your previous appointment (or you can drink a juice alternative) and you just have to drink it one hour before your appointment and no food or water afterward. It's nice because I don't need to wait there for an hour before they draw my blood.

  • I actually just did my one hour glucose test yesterday.  You don't have to do anything to prepare for it.  You don't need to fast or anything like you do for the 2 hour testing.  I ate breakfast and snack like I usually do every morning.  The drink is not the most pleasant thing in the world though.  It's VERY sugary and ir orange flavour.  They give you 5 minutes to drink the bottle and then you will have to wait approximately an hour before they take your blood.  You can't eat, drink, or chew gum or anything until after they take your blood.  GL!
  • For my 1 hr test i just had 2 scrambled eggs and water. I'll probably call today for my results.. hope i passed!!
  • Thank you Ladies :)!
