Cloth Diapering

Please help me.  I am absolutely clueless about cloth diapering.  I have several questions and I beg you to speak to me like I am 5 years old.

1. How often do you have to change sizes?

2. What supplies and how many of them would I need to get started?

3. How do you know the value of the cloth diaper if I was to buy second hand?

Please tell me any more information I may need to know.  I have a ton of formula laying around and I was considering trying to trade them for a few diapers to try it out.

Re: Cloth Diapering

  • Try the cloth diapering board.

Here's a link to my blog re: cloth diapering (not clicky b/c I'm on a mac)

    https://www.themaagmenagerie.com/The_Maag_Menagerie/Christinas_Blog/Entries/2012/5/24_Cloth_Diapering.html

1.)  I'd get OS if your LO is at least 10 lbs. than they'll last until they're potty trained.

2.)  See blog - re: cloth wipes get like 24 and you'll be fine - diapers we have probably about 25 and I wash every 2 days.

3.)  That I'm unsure of, but look at Kelly's Closet and Jillian's drawers for gently used diapers and they usually have good prices.  Ask this to the CD board.

Let me know if you have any other questions!  I totally encourage it.  Dilly has never had diaper rash, or a poop explosion and my overnight diaper suggestions he can wear from 7pm to 7am w/o fussing.

  • fI don't know if my link address worked.  Just try going to my website www.themaagmenagerie.com and go under Christina's Blog and it's a newer entry titled cloth diapering (has tons of info and links to everything).

  • 1. I use bumgenius which is one size and adjusts to baby size with buttons.  Directions for size is provided with diapers.

    2.  I use the biodegradable mio liners to help contain the poopy diapers. I also have the mio nappy diaper pail to hold dirty diapers until my weekly washing.  I bought/was given 48 diapers so that I would only have to wash them once a week.

     3. ? Not sure, for two bumgenius diapers I paid 35 dollars. Perhaps 20 dollars for two used?

I have also found a great homemade spray and wash that is kind to babies bottoms. 2 cup vinegar, 1 cup water, and 1/4 cup dial.  Good luck!

    1) We use one size (OS) BumGenius 4.0, Fuzzibunze Elite and Grovia's OS. They grow with baby from approx 1 month to potty training. I have 24 and do laundry every other day.

    2) You need a cd friendly detergent (I use Nelly's), a dry bag or pail liner, and possibly cloth wipes. There are other things you may need if you decide to go with it full time (ex a small diaper bag dry bag), but it can wait.

    3) OS CDs are about $20-25 new and $10-15 in my area. The resale is pretty high, so if you want to sell them off you'll make back some of your money.

You may have a hard time trading formula for dipes since most CD mommas also BF or need all their diapers.

I love my CDs and they have paid for themselves I'm sure. I lovey different brands for different reasons and we also haven't had any rashes or blowouts. We have had a few leaks due to user error or in the mornings which we have solved by using wool covers for overnights.  Give CDs a try, you won't regret it.

  • 1. You can buy one size diapers and not need to buy any different sizes.  If you choose sized diapers, it will vary from baby to baby.  My LO has been wearing smalls since about 3w.

    2. Depends on how often you do laundry.  We started with 20 for every other day washing but we have closer to 30 now and never run out.  If you do covers and prefolds, you buy fewer covers since you can use them more than once without washing.

    3. The CD board would be a great place to ask about specific used diapers.

This is my favorite video series for anyone just starting to look into CDing:

We love CDing and even with the pricier options, you save tons of money!

  • 1. How often do you have to change sizes? After newborn sizes I am using OS (Onesize) which means they adjust in size as the baby grows. I also have some S, M, and L for days when I want a trimmer fit.

    2. What supplies and how many of them would I need to get started? I have about 30 and that gets me through 2 days with a day to wash the other 2 days so a total of 3 days. You don't want to let them sit too long. All you really need is diapers (which ever kind you decide to use) and a CD friendly detergent. You can get all the extras like a pail liner, wetbags, wipes... but you don't have to.

    3. How do you know the value of the cloth diaper if I was to buy second hand? I am always looking for a deal so I usually don't pay more than 60% of the retail value for diapers in the best condition. Just remember to check for deals from retail locations first. Many carriers have "seconds" sales (minor flaws with low prices) or Buy x G y free.

Diaperswappers works well for me when I want to trade things. I have never had a problem. I just traded some of DS's too small diapers for a ipod!

as others have said, it's smart to get one size diapers the adjust as your baby grows all the way to potty training

    2. What supplies and how many of them would I need to get started?

I personally have 24 diapers. That's plenty for us, and I could probably get by on 18 if I had to, but don't tell DH that. :)

    3. How do you know the value of the cloth diaper if I was to buy second hand?

I personally wouldn't buy 2nd hand unless it was REALLY cheap. Most used CDs I've looked into sell for very close to the original price which I think is insane. I paid WAY less for brand new Kawaiis (theluvyourbaby.com, I know, stupid website name) than I would have for used BumGeniuses. My friend uses all BG and I use all Kawaii and we see very little difference.
