N used to be great at bedtime - we'd read him 3 or 4 books and he would sit on our laps, turning pages and loving it. Not anymore. Now he's all over the place, trying to turn around, climb down, etc. He's only marginally better during the day. I have always had visions of reading to my kids on a regular basis but that can't happen if he won't sit still! It's probably (I hope!) a phase, but I'm just wondering about the rest of you guys.

Re: Do your kiddos sit still for books?
It depends on her mood and the book. She loves the flap books that she can pull down and play with. Or any books with textures. She generally loves to turn the pages too. Sometimes even her favorites just don't do it and she's up trying to get to something else as soon as we start. I still read to her, even if she's playing with something else. I figure she can still hear it so hopefully she's getting something out of it.
I think as they get older and start to appreciate the story, it gets better!
At bedtime? No way does she sit still and I think it's partially because DH always does bedtime stories and she knows he'll let her get down if she squirms enough. But during the day she'll sit still or even just sit on her own and look at books by herself. Sometimes she even "reads" to herself and gets really into it. It's hilarious!
Edit: Forgot to say that I also think she doesn't sit still for him because he ALWAYS picks long, long, paper books instead of the shorter board books geared toward her age. I try to tell him to pick a shorter story that she could help turn the pages and stuff and he never does. (How do I make the eye roll face?)
This. it's definitely more about turning the pages than hearing the story though. Funny voices and hand motions and stuff help too. She has a few books that she'll drag across the room for me to read over and over, and those tend to be the ones that require the most silly acting from me. I don't think that's a coincidence
DS spent a good portion of the day pulling off and putting back books on the shelf today. Between each, he would eat the corner.
He doesn't much sit for books at all.
