Pregnant after a Loss

Ugh-Fifth's Disease going around at work

I'm a teacher and got a note in my mailbox today from the school nurse about a kid having Fifth's Disease in my school. She attached an info sheet from 1988(!!!) about symptoms and risks to pregnant women. Needless to say I did more research when I got home and I'm kind of freaking out! I called my dr and I'm going in after school tomorrow to get my titers (sp?) tested at the same time as my beta. For all I know, the kid could be in my class but the nurse won't say who it is. Just one more thing to stress about with this new pregnancy. On the bright side there are 17 more days of school. I'm taking this summer off so I can "relax". Anyone with first hand experience with Fifth's Disease?

  • Just to try to calm you down a bit, my Dr. was also concerned with me and Fifth's Disease since I work with kids as well.  She said that most people are exposed to it when they are children, so they are immune to it, so there is no risk to you or LO.  She did bloodwork on me also and it came back that I am immune like she though, and that made me feel better.  I wouldn't worry, because you've probably already been exposed to it and didn't know.  I would definately get the bloodwork done to check it out, but most likely, it's not a big deal.

  • I am a teacher too and had 8 kids with it at one time before school let out, when I was 4 wks pregnant. I am fine. It is a VERY common illness and most kids that have it do not get diagnosed because the symptoms can be like other very common sicknesses.

  • We had this going around at work a few weeks back and my dr didn't seemed really concerned about it. He just said if I run a fever to come in and they will give me a shot. Most people are exposed to it early on. You should be fine.

  • I just dropped DS off at daycare this morning - he has not been in since last Wednesday - and there was a memo in his locker about another child having Fifth Disease so I am hoping that with DS being out a week prevented him from being exposed. Ugh.

  • It was going around my school and I actually had implant bleeding at the same time so I was freaking out. After going to the doctor everything checked out fine and he said I most likely had it as a kid so it was nothing to worry about it.
  • Thank you ladies! I didn't mean to post and run I'm sorry about that. My computer's been crazy. I was tested today and should know tomorrow if I'm immune.,
