Bronchitis & possible sinus infection...meds?

I spoke to the nurse at my OB's office and she said I can take regular sudafed and use saline nasal spray...that's it.  I really want to use a cough suppressant, but Robisussum makes me gag.  I have read that Mucinex is okay, so I bought Mucinex for Children but haven't taken it yet.  Do your Dr.'s recommend using that?

  • You're fine*

Mucinex is on my list from my OB of approved drugs to take during pregnancy. So is: Cepacol Lozenges/spray, Chlortrimetron, Chloraseptic spray, halls cough drops, Robitussin DM, Tylenol Sinus, and Vics vapor rub.

I had strep throat last week and was told most antibiotics are safe as well.

*as always, ask your doctor. Trust internet strangers about which medications you can take at your own risk.

  • they didnt prescribe an antibiotic like amox or zithromax?? Seems odd if you have bronchitis and/or sinus infection.  Ive done the whole sudafed and nasal spray thing.. both are fine to take during pg. My Dr does not recommend using Mucinex... only plain robitussin and plain sudafed.  If my memory serves me correctly mucinex and robitussin have similar ingredients.  Not sure of the amt or strength though.  Feel better!

I've had bronchitis twice this pregnancy and both time they've given me antibiotics along with a hydrocodone cough syrup, so you should be able to do a little more than just otc meds and saline.

  • I just got a sinus infection too (39 weeks).  My doctor gave me an antibiotic and told me to take mucinex to break everything up.  She didn't say anything about taking children's meds.  She said its pretty difficult to kick these sort of infections because our body is busy working on other things.  You may want to talk to your doctor to make sure that you wouldn't have any complications and see if you can get an antibiotic.
  • I had a bad sinus infection twice this pregnancy which led to a crummy chest cold.  My doctor prescribed an antibiotic but said I could take either Mucinex or Sudafed but not both at the same time.
