Hello everyone. I posted on Toddlers 12-24 about DD needing an EEG, and was referred to the SN FAQ EEG post - all of the information was very helpful. THank you!!!
We saw our pediatrician today because of something that happened at daycare yesterday. In the middle of her nap, DD opened her eyes real wide and was staring at the ceiling. They kept saying her name but couldn't get her attention, and then she went right back to sleep. Then when she woke from her nap, her whole body pushed out stiff, her eyes opened and started darting back and forth. They kept saying her name without any response. Once it stopped (30 seconds or so), she was kind of out of it, seemed tired, not herself, gazing off into space every now and then, etc. An hour later she was completely back to normal.
The pediatrician is sending us for an EEG (hopefully tomorrow, just waiting for a call back). However, she doesn't think it was a seizure - she wants to rule that out. She thinks that maybe DD was extra tired from the weekend, having night terrors, or awoken suddenly from really deep sleep.
However, I'm not so sure. The more I read and the more I think about it, I'm really curious to find out what is going on. There have been a few times (always when in her carseat in the car) when her head slumps over and it looks like she is passed out. I'd be yelling her name and after 30 seconds to a minute, she'd look up at me. I always just thought she was really tired and fell asleep that way. That has happened maybe 3-5 times over the past year. I never thought anything of it until after my appt with the doc today.
Anyway, I'm just looking to hear any personal experiences that might give me some insight. I am new to all of this and everything I am reading is very overwhelming! Thank you!!
Re: Seizure or something else
I do not have experience with seizures, but it kind of sounds like it to me. Especially how she reacted when it was over with appearing tired, out of it, etc.
Hopefully one or more of the seizure moms will chime in. I hope you are able to get an appointment soon!

Yes, it does sound like a seizure to me, especially given that she has had spells before. Coming in and out of sleep is a common time to have seizures, and being exhausted can make you more likely to have them as well.
Our DS had a seizure like the one you described where we thought he had fallen asleep in his high chair. He has also had them at day care during nap. The good thing is you are getting her in for the EEG now so you can hopefully get some data and get her treatment. When my DS is on the correct levels of his medication, he does great. So don't let what you read online scare you. There is life with epilepsy, if that is what she has.
I always joke about how they expect the parents to DRIVE the kids there after being awake all night! Also dont' let her sleep on the way!
We have minimal seizure experience but to me, it sounds very much like a seizure. IF your EEG is normal, I would personally want to still see a neurologist and see what they want to do. They may want to do a 24hour at home EEG, or something of the like.
Good luck and keep us updated!
All of this, especially the video part. My daughter had seizures when she was first born. She was put on meds right away and they have controlled them. There were a few times I was concerned about her behavior so I got it all on video and showed it to her neurologist. Follow your gut and be persistent with it (i.e., even if your pedi thinks otherwise). Good luck with everything!!
Thanks, everyone. We did ok getting up early and my dad was a rock star keeping her awake in the car! She was still during the EEG, but cried a lot. I never got her to fall asleep, but I'm hoping she had enough quiet time that they can read it. We should have the results Monday.
Our pedi did mention videotaping any sort of episode. Her daycare teachers keep a camera in the room and said they would definitely tape anything they see.
Thank you for all of your advice. I have zero experience with this and it really helps to hear from people who do!
