Pregnant after a Loss

Meat Aversions?

Lately I have not been able to even stand the sight of anytime of Meat. I have been trying to eat Black Beans and Eggs to get protein but I still can't eat much of those either. Any one have ideas of what I could possibly eat to help make sure I still get those needed nutrients? I don't even want to be around anyone eating them.

  • Tofu, nuts (peanut butter - yum), dark leafy greens. Google how to be healthy while vegetarian and pregnant - there's lots of info.

Sorry you're feeling sick. Hopefully in a couple weeks it will go away and it won't be an issue anymore! Not a big deal if you don't eat that stuff for a few weeks...I wouldn't worry about it too much.

  • I'm a vegetarian... like pp said: nuts, tofu, dark greens, lots of beans... I also use whey protein as a supplement.  I make a smoothie every day that has loads of fruit, whey protein and supergreens just to make sure I'm hitting my goals.  The whey protein they sell in the store is nasty and full of fake stuff... but if you buy it online you can get a good quality one that is actually just the whey and flavor it however you want.  I don't recommend soy protein because too much soy isn't the best idea in pregnancy and I already get it in tofu and other meat subs.

I had a meat aversion from about 6w until about 16 weeks. Then fish started sounding good and now chicken is ok too but absolutely no red meat. Nuts are great (and a great way to satisfy the salt cravings I was having), dairy has protein in it if your up to that. As PP said read up on vegetarian diet during pregnancy and when all else fails... ask your dr for suggestions.

  • Thank You Ladies. Lately my what I can eat has been getting less and less. There are more days than not I can't do eggs but when I can I try. I will try these ideas. I love Peanut Butter so I may just be simple and do a PB&J in the am. Nuts are good too. My brain was not thinking, well for the most part it still isn't working properly.

  • You are not alone I usually really only eat chicken or pork  and for some reason  I can't stomach it.  The thought of the meat makes me want to get sick. I might try more peanut butter and nuts.

    Good luck!!

  • i couldn't eat beef or Pok (aside from some nitrate/nitrite free bacon or sausage) entire first tri.  We did a lot of chicken instead and DH had to cook it.

if you're not a tofu fan (i know i'm not) try to get in more of other types of beans.  I really enjoyed hummus.

  • I'm also a vegetarian so I hear you on the meat aversion!!  :)  The funny thing about protein is that most people consume way too much and society thinks we need way more than we actually do.  Also, it's not widely acknowledged that protein is also in things like bread and pasta - which people assume are "all carbs".

A little while after going veg, I decided to track everything I ate on MyDailyPlate.com just to get a picture of how much of everything I was eating.  (protein, sugar, carbs, cals etc) and nearly every single day - without ever going out of my way for protein rich foods and I found that I was still going *over* the recommended daily amount of protein. Without ever eating meat.

My normal diet consists of fruits, veggies, whole grains (rice, quinoa, pastas, breads, waffles, pancakes, etc) nuts (all kinds),  beans (chickpeas, black beans, pinto, kidney beans) ...

  • Oh, meat, my enemy my friend.  I hated the sight and smell of it for the first 4-5 months.  I was just too sick.  Even now, it's hit or miss.  I eat much more chicken and other meat now than I did before, but some nights I just can't stand the thought of it still.

I pretty much lived off of peanut butter, cheese, and nuts.  I couldn't really even eat eggs until recently.  My doctor never seemed concerned.  Once the morning sickness gave way to brighter days I introduced any form of meat that I could atleast 1 meal a day and now I eat 1 egg almost every morning.
