STM's: Stretch Marks like your mother???

I have read several things that say you are likely to get stretch marks if your mother got stretch marks and the same with varicose veins... Has anyone experienced the opposite? My mom has a couple on her boobs but none on her stomach, hips and butt, but yesterday I saw that I have some really light ones developing on my hips. I know that using lotion may help (which I use daily) but sometimes it is inevitable.

Re: STM's: Stretch Marks like your mother???

  • My mother didn't get a single stretch mark from any of her three kids.  After DS though, my stomach looked like a city road map :(  I used lotion and it helped a little bit but not much.  This time around I don't really have it as bad and the old ones have faded a bit.

  • My mom got stretchmarks right at the end of her pregnancies, but all her babies were 9lbs+.

I didn't get any but my baby was only 7lbs, so I'm thinking that was the difference maker.

  • My mom had stretch marks all over her stomach and so do I.

  • My mom didn't get any with her 4 kids (one set of twins). I got a BUNCH with DS!

I take after my dad's side and he has a lot of stretch marks from being overweight.

  • I'm a FTM, but my mom got stretch marks with both pg and thus far I am stretch mark free.  I know everyone says genetics genetics genetics when it comes to s/m's but we do get our genes from more than one pool.  Also, maybe my mom gained weight very quickly, didn't stay hydrated enough, didn't moisturize frequently and so on.  So I am not convinced that genetics is the only factor.

My mom has ton of stretch marks and vericose veins(though I think both are due to previously being heavy) and I didn't get either with DS or this pregnancy so far(knock on wood).
  • My mom didn't get them until her 3rd child, my almost 10lb of a baby brother. I on the other hand, got them with my first DD, who was barely 7lbs. She's also taller than me by 4-5 inches and I think that "helped" her. Honestly I think it's all a crapshoot and you either get them or you don't, with lots of factors playing in.

  • My mother had none and I have none.
promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • After 4 pregnancies, my mom had no stretch marks on her stomach, and just a few faint ones on her hips.  She does have varicose veins, but she has been a nurse for 38 years, and has spent a lot of time on her feet.  I have no stretch marks on my stomach (fingers crossed), but also some faint ones on my hips.  I don't have any varicose veins, and I am a teacher, so I also spend a lot of time on my feet, but I trained as a dancer and worked out regularly until month 8.

Not me (my mom had them and mine popped up at 37 weeks...thought for sure I was going to avoid them lol).  But my MIL has zero stretch marks (2 kids) and my SIL has them, so in her case she still got them.

I've heard the best thing you can do is exercise/stay active and to drink lots of water.  There are no magic creams unfortunately :(
