Something doctor said

At my last appointment, my doctor told me that if I felt any decreased movement at all, I should come on in to get things checked out, and not even wait to do kick counts. Everything I'm reading, though, says that it's relatively normal for LO to start moving around less as we get closer to labor... I wish I had asked my doctor about it at the time, but I didn't, and now I'm wondering if there's something I don't know. Does anyone have any idea why she might have said that? LO didn't get up this morning when DH and I did (she usually starts moving around as soon as DH rolls out of bed), and I don't think it would have worried me if the doctor hadn't said that, but now I'm a little concerned.

  • My doc said to make sure you feel 10 or more movements before lunch and the same is true in the second half of the day but if anything seems off to call as there is no harm in coming in and being hooked up to the machine. She said the movements may seem slower because of room issues.  As for the PP waiting, just be careful I know everyone wants to avoid intervention etc? but I know someone who lost her baby at 38 weeks and had she called when she noticed the decreased movement that may not have happened.  There was an issue with the baby?s cord and if it was caught early a c-section may have saved the baby's life.

  • Call your doctor if you are worried, but was your baby really active the day before? If mine has a really busy day sometimes the only thing he does the next day is sleep. Then he gets up to wacky hijinks again the next after he's had a rest.

In the past few weeks my baby's movement patterns have changed a lot. She used to be extremely active, but now she is a lot more sluggish. Instead of kicks I now feel her slowly pushing body parts against my stomach. It worried me at first, but now I'm used to it. If I go a long time without feeling much movement I usually lay down on my side and eat/drink something cold to wake her up. If you ever feel like something is wrong then you should call the doctor right away. It's best to be safe!

  • I was told it is normal for decreased movement and if concerned to drink ice water or sugary drink and lay down to do kick counts.

If your dr wants you to come in right away maybe she is just overly cautious. But I would definitely call her today and talk to her about it.

  • My LO's movements have definitely decreased lately- both in frequency and the strength of movements.  My OB said that because we were kind of battling over the same space that there would be more flutter type movements now that may not be as obvious.  As long as I get 6-8 movements in an hour at any point during a day, my OB isn't concerned, but I know different OB's are different on that.  Right after I talked to my OB this morning about movement, when I raised my shirt for the doppler, he commented that he saw her move and then she immediately did it again.  The timing was ironic.

  • LO is still moving, but like PPers said, it's a little different.  I'm getting more pushing, rolling type movements, instead of quick kicks.   Most of them are very low - like LO could be trying to exit through my butt or bladder.

I don't ever look for specific kick counts or exact times, because LO doesn't keep a strict schedule and is pretty lazy compared with DD.  If I haven't felt him/her in a few hours, I will usually change my position, drink something sweet and focus on the baby.  As long as I get some kind of movement, I assume all is well in there.

This exactly.  Also, she always responds to DH's voice, which is adorable AND alarming (hellooooo, this is your mother talking here...)

  • I went into L&D for this issue at 36ish weeks (at like 3 in the morning!!!). My LO hadn't moved all day - not when I pushed on my belly, or lay on my side... I drank orange juice and sat in a quiet room.. I drank a coke and sat in a quiet room... Nothing I did produced any movement. Finally, after waiting for some kind of movement during his most active time (10:30-3 am) I got super paranoid and went in. It turned out that baby had flipped positions and I just couldn't feel him moving, but they were able to capture it on the monitor. I felt like an idiot, but Dr. said better safe than sorry.
