Wisdom teeth question...kinda baby related

I have to get all 4 of my wisdom teeth taken out...boo...but I dont have a ton of leave saved up to take some days off.  I have a 4 day weekend coming up for DD's birthday June 7th and for her party June 9th.  After that we were going to go out of town to visit DH's family for a week. I was thinking of going June 7 in the morning then having the rest of the day to spend with her...but has anyone had this done? Will I be in too much pain to enjoy her day and my long weeked with her? If so I'd rather suck it up and just be in pain at work. Any thoughts?

  • I'm sure we've all had different experiences with it. I had all 4 taken out in college. I was a waste of life that day. Groggy from the sedation, and in pain from the procedure. I was lucky that I bounced back quickly, but I've had friends who have been bed-ridden for a few days. Also, you can't eat much, so that sucks. There are rules about what you can eat, and you'll have trouble opening your mouth. I would 100% NOT recommend doing it that day.

  • I think this totally depends on the person.  I had mine taken out all at once but they were really a mess.  I wouldn't have wanted to care for LO or be at work for a day or two.  I had bad jaw pain and a really bad headache for a few days. I hope you have a better experience than I did.

  • I agree with PP - it is different for everyone. It also depends on the positioning of your teeth and how badly they are inpacted. I had mine taken out in college but was not sedated - only had local anesthetic. So my recovery that day wasn't so bad. I also only took Motrin. But I felt like crap for a few days and was very swollen and couldn't eat. I doubt I would have wanted to take care of a baby! I think it's going to depend on you and the extent of the procedure you need, and if you require sedation or not.

  • I had mine out in university after exams finished for Christmas break.  It was Dec. 19th.  I was a write-off that day (couldn't drive, couldn't eat, couldn't stay awake).  The next day was when the pain actually started, as well we the vomiting from the antibiotics and pain meds (and maybe the anaesthesia the day before?), and we ended up in emerg after I puked for 9 hours and was convinced I would rip out the stitches and get a dry socket.  Even by Christmas Day - 6 days later - my 11 month old nephew was eating faster than I was, and a friend asked who that person was in pics...it was me.  With my swollen chipmunk cheeks.

How many days did your dr reccommened you take off? It's important that you listen I what he tells you to do at least to a certain extent. I got mine taken out 3 years ago, and he told me to take a week off, but I ended up being out for nine days. Mine were boney impacted, and I had a cyst he had to take out on one of them. I also threw up the evening after I had them taken out, which caused me to get a dry socket. And trust me, if you get a dry socket you will be miserable.

But, DH just had his taken out by the same dr a couple months ago, and the dr only told him to take 3 days, and DH was fine taking just ibuprofen and no Vicodin. Whereas I was taking both ibuprofen and Vicodin and I was still a wreck!

  • This is definitely one of those situations where it will be different for everyone.  I had mine done at least 15 years ago and I remember being so worked up prior to the procedure because it seemed like every single person I knew had a horror story to share about their wisdom tooth extraction.  And I was having five impacted teeth removed (yes, I apparently had an extra one).  It was actually a piece of cake for me.  I had it done, if I recall correctly, on a Monday and took the Tuesday off as well and really could have gotten by with just taking the day of off.  I really wasn't in much pain at all (I threw out the pain pills - Percocet - because I just do not tolerate them well and Advil worked just fine).  Word of warning though:  do not drink OJ until you have healed.  That was a painful lesson learned.

  • I had mine done last September.  As I recall the pain level wasn't to bad but I ended up sleeping the whole day that it was done.  My mom had come down to be my driver while DH had to work and she ended up spending the whole day with the boys while I slept....I only woke up long enough to bump and dump at our usual feeding hours.

The day of the surgery was the only  horrible day for me.  I was fine after that and only took tylenol (because I was BFing) for pain.
