Transition to WCM

My 1 year old DS stays with my MIL while I work.  She ran out of formula one day, and gave him a little WCM.  He loved it, and once we finished the can of formula we had on hand, he went on WCM and never looked back.

So, we have the opposite question of some people who have trouble transitioning their LO...he wants WCM!  How much should he have? It seems like he's drinking it constantly.  He's finished a 1/2 gallon since Friday and we've been gone a bit of that time.

He's also decided that unless he's tired and fussy, he doesn't want a bottle.  I'm a happy and proud Mama!

Re: Transition to WCM

  • I read somewhere around 16 oz. of WCM a day give or take a few.  If you think he's drinking too much maybe try a sippy cup of water too.

I'd check with the Pedi.  Congrats on the easy switch to WCM.  I hope my little guy is as easy in a few months.

  • Wholesomebabyfood recommends less than 16oz due to interference with iron absorption.

  • When my kids were little I offered about 1/2 C in a sippy cup at each meal (4 oz) and roughly 2 oz in a cup at each snack.  Neither one of my kids had bottles by the time they were a year old.  If they drank it all, they got roughly 16 oz a day which according to the Canada Food Guide is appropriate for their age.  As for the iron absorption mentioned, I think that as long as they have a well rounded diet you really don't have to worry about that.  If your still unsure, talk to your pedi but from everything I've read, they should get about 16 oz a day.

  • Ditto all the others, approx. 16 oz is a good amount. We only offered milk at meals and right before bed, and had to limit how much she was getting because she loves milk. Even now at 2 years old we have to limit her some days because she would rather drink milk over anything.
