*clicky* Pacifiers... are you going to use them or not?!

Are you going to use pacifiers or not?   ...just wondering...

if you are what kinds have you bought/registered for? or for stm's what did you use last time/s?

if not how do you plan to soothe your fussy baby?

  • DS1 wouldn't take a pacifier, we kept trying different kinds so now we've got millions of them around that never got used. Maybe DS2 will use them.

  • C_mo: ahh, makes sense. We are plannng to try going without them by choice. I was wondering if I'm nuts for thinking we could go totally pacifier free.

You're not nuts thinking you can go paci free. So many people do. We didn't but it's because DD LOVED hers and it was her one soothing thing. She slept so well with it. We started with them right away but she didn't use them all the time. It wasn't until she was teething really badly (8 months) that she went to town on them . :)

Every baby is different and each parent is different too so just go with the flow!

I voted for the 3rd one because you never know if your baby is going to take one or not. I used them for Wyatt and he still has the damned things, we're in the process of trying to wean him, but it's not going well. It doesn't discourage me from giving one to this baby if he'll take it.

This except ours started out as a necessity to correct a latch issue. DS had a naturally shallow suck  and he kept his tongue pressed to the roof of his mouth and I have very small nipples so we needed the paci to correct his issues so we could deal with my fact of life. lol  We used gumdrop soothies, https://www.gumdroppacifier.com/ You can get them in a giant container here for super cheap.  (You need a lot because you will loose them.)

Gumdrops are made in the US which is also a perk.

  • I clicked yes, but it really depends on what LO wants.  I was all against them for DD, but she ended up using them until she was 2 1/2.  For her, she really liked the soothie kind (the kind they gave us in the hospital) and sometimes a Nuk one. I'm not opposed to having this one use them also, but I'm also not like 'of course I'll use them, how could you live without them.'

  • We are going to try to use them because they help reduce the risk of SIDS during the first 6 months.

We have 1-2 of several different brands of pacifiers to see what baby likes best.

  • At first, I was against them for DD. Then I tried and she wouldn't take one, so I was a human pacifier at times. This time around I will offer one and see if this DD likes it. I honestly think it will be easier if she does!

  • I used one from Hour 4 with my daughter and by the time she started teething she didnt want anything to do with it lol. I am going to see how this baby does because I dont plan on turning into the human binky. If he wants it great if not...all well one less thing to hae to keep track of Smile

  • We used them when we noticed our DS started sucking his thumb/fingers shortly after birth.  His pediatrician said it's easier to wean them than thumb sucking.  And I totally agreed...

We'll see with this one - he may not take to sucking fingers/paci at all....

Considering my 6 year old DD is currently sitting with me sucking on her thumb like a piglet, I would definitely prefer these take a paci.  We tried everything with her and she refused.  I have registered for the Avent and Nuk brands.

From a dental perspective I would prefer paci's over a thumb sucker anyday but who knows how lo will do. Only time will tell. If she is a paci baby we are going to try our hardest to quit at 1 year. Maybe wishful thinking too...we'll see.

This exactly. DS didn't take one until teething and he's been hooked ever since. At 18 months he has them only for naps and bedtime except recently he's demanding it more with the molars and eye teeth coming in. My goal was to get rid of it by 18 months, but it stops a tantrum and calms him right down. So they aren't going anywhere.

  • thanks for everyone's imput!! totally valid points I didnt think of!  (medical uses for Pacifiers, Pacifier is better than thumb..)  Before this I was thinking we'd go Pacifier Free (mostly so we didnt have the weaning struggle) but the human pacifier thing doesnt sound fun!  LOL  I guess I will look up ways to soothe without a Pacifier and the different Pacifier styles.

...I wonder what Pacifier is most like the breast as I plan to BF...

I've bought two different kinds since they say some kids are picky about these things. If you are going to BF though they suggest waiting around 4 weeks before introducing pacifiers (just like bottles) to avoid nipple confusion. Our plan is to go without until then. We have a long road trip about 4 weeks after baby is born so we may pull them out for the first time then. But even if not then, I'm sure we'll use them. I have no problem using them, but when my child gets older I'll surely try to wean at an appropriate time.

  • We offered them to DS, because he obviously wanted something in his mouth at all times. He never took to them though. At about 4 months he figured out how to reliably get his thumb in his mouth and has been a great self soother since. He is 19 months now, and still sucks his thumb, but just when he's tired. I'm not worried about it. Apparently I was a thumb sucker, and quit on my own a little after 2.

  • Pacifiers are magical. Babies just need a way to comfort themselves and I actually feel lucky that they worked so well for my kid. If he's upset or fussy, tired or cranky - the pacifier immediately puts him into chill out mode. It's like giving him a valium.

He's almost 2 and I haven't even tried to wean him yet, though I do restrict them to bed times and tantrum stoppers only.

ETA - I also nursed for 14 months. Nipple confusion was never an issue. Also started with soothies and DS didn't like them. Switched to avents and THEN experienced the magic that is a baby that will take a paci, lol.

  • we'll probably try to start with one of the orthodontia ok ones, but we'll see.  after talking with a lot of our friends that have kids, it seems like it would be easier to wean off of a paci than sucking their thumb as the paci is not attached to their person.  we'll see though.

  • DS never took them and that was completely fine so we'll just wait and see what this baby wants.

  • We used the Avent pacifiers for DS, and I've already got a package of the same brand for DS2.  For some reason, I think they look nicer than the other brands (haha!), but we'll switch it up if this baby doesn't like them (or he'll go paci-free!).
  • DS never needed one, but I got really lucky with him in every way. He was incredibly laid back, rarely fussy. I plan on buying ONE pacifier to start out with, just to see if this LO needs it. (Fingers crossed he's just as easy as the first!)

I'm hoping to.  I don't want to be a human pacifier and I don't want her to suck her thumb if I can avoid it.  We liked Mams brand with DS.  No handle so he wasn't able to accidentally pull it out as easily, and with the nipple it didn't matter which direction he put it in.  We will be avoiding Soothie/Gumdrop brand at all costs - I hate what it does to baby's bite if they're still using them after their teeth come in.  Avent brand will be our second choice.

With DS he was 16 months when we broke him if the pacifier cold turkey.  We had about 10 minutes of crying at bedtime one night and that was it.  After that it was like it didn't exist. :)
