LO turns 11 months! Any tips for party planning?

Hi!  B just turned 11 months...and I'm so excited to be planning his party.  Invites are out, I'm just waiting on RSVPs.  So, while I'm planning, I can't help but wonder if any of you guys ran across something that made you say "I wish I had thought of that," or did something you wish you wouldn't have spent the time on?

Enlighten me...I've never had 35 people in my house before, so I'm excited but anxious!

Re: LO turns 11 months! Any tips for party planning?

  • Yay - the planning is the fun part!  The cleanup is the hard part :(

I recommend paper plates/napkins/plastic cutlery to make easy cleanup.  And simple disposable tablecloths over everything.

We got way too big of a cake!  The bakery said it was for 50-70 people and we had about 60 people I think.  Well I had over 1/2 a cake left and I was cutting pretty big slices (people were complaining they were too big!)  So I wish I got a smaller cake or made/got cupcakes instead.

One thing that was a lifesaver was catering sandwiches. It was just simple food but it saved me from having to cook.  And cold food is so much easier because you don't have to worry about keeping it hot.  We did two 6 foot subs from a local deli, and then my MIL and I made pasta salad, broccoli salad and a regular greens salad.  Easy stuff.  (I also included foods from the Very Hungry Caterpillar theme, but those required little prep)

You are brave having that many people at your house.  We did it at the clubhouse in our development to avoid having people in our house.   Have fun!

ETA: We had a lot of "older" kids (like 4-6 years old) so we had a crafts table as well.  Simple coloring pages and a "make your own caterpillar" craft which kept them occupied.  Also they loved playing with the balloons.

  • My advice is to not go overboard.  Remember that your LO will not remember it.  Take lots of pictures!  We must have picked a bad date for G's party because not very many people can make it.  I was upset at first but I have finally decided that we will have fun no matter how many people are here.  I will be making a "Watch Me Grow" banner with a pic from each month this past year.  I almost decided not to make it since it will be a very small crowd, but then I figured that it is something that we can keep up for awhile and I was very excited about making it.  Oh, and try not to stress about the party.  Your LO only gets one 1st birthday so enjoy it!
  • My biggest piece of advice is to do as much as you can ahead of time, it makes a world of difference the day of the party!  Also, be sure to take lots of pictures, or better yet, put someone in charge of taking them for you.  I got quite a few last weekend at our party, but wish I had thought to get some of him with the grandparents, aunts/uncles, etc...

    Have fun!!
