formula question...help!

DD was taking bottles of BM until today.  when she was on BM, she was taking on average 22-26ozs.  today, she is on all formula, and if she takes a full bottle before bed, she will only be at 18ozs.  is that normal until she gets used to formula?

Re: formula question...help!

  • Formula does tend to be thicker. I wouldn't worry too much unless her doc says anything. As long as she is full and gaining weight properly they usually don't worry. I've had to supplement with formula since Dom's second month and he spat up every time, and his pediatrician wasn't worried since he was gaining weight and healthy otherwise. He does better now, babies just need to work up to it.

  • My 2 month LO gets mostly formula and maybe two bottles of breastmilk a day. Formula takes him longer to drink and I too, I think because it is thicker. There has been days when he only takes in like 18 total ounces in a day ( 12 oz ormula/ 6oz BM) and I would worry too! Then again some days he does get his 24 oz so it can vary day to day. But like PP said, as long as Baby is gaining weight and seems healthy and content, I would not worry too much.
  • When my little man was on BM he would take alot more than formula, its completely normal, formula is a lot thicker than BM and they tend to need less than what they would take from BM.

  • I don't know how formula compares to BM, but my LO is about the same age as yours and sometimes only drinks 18 oz, other  days its more.  I was worried she wasn't eating enough, but at her 2 month appt she was in the 85th percentile for weight and 90th percentile for height, which was higher than her 1 month appt.  The pedi assured me she would let me know if she was hungry.
