I have been going back and forth, weighing the pros and cons of each carrier for over a week now and thought I could use some outside help with this one. If you use the Ergo or the Beco, tell me what you think. And if you use the Beco, did you go for the Butterfly 2 or the Gemini?
My second questions is, and even as I type this I know how silly it is, but is it too late to start BW? My LO is 13 weeks and when he was first born we used a ring sling, apparently I am ring sling impaired and it just never felt right to me, so after a few weeks I gave up. I meant to pick out a new carrier but never got around to it. My DH reminded me the other day and he would prefer either the Ergo or Beco... so here I am.
Thanks for the advice!
Re: Ergo vs Beco, and is it too late?
I started wearing my son in his ergo at 2.5 months and I still wear him in it almost everyday now and he is 13 months old! So no it is never too late!
Also I love my ergo! It is my favorite baby item we have!
I had the same debate and settled on the beco gemeni... Haven't had the baby yet so no reviews but it was based on feedback I had received from lots of moms. I think people love both but the beco has the face out option and from what I hear it doesn't get as hot... I'm due in august and I live in the south..so this was a big deal for me
I have both the Ergo and the Gemini and I love both for different reasons. I didn't get the Ergo until DD was 3 months old, so never used it when she was a newborn (it was a hand me down). I've never used the newborn insert in the Ergo, and I've only done a front carry, front facing.
I find the Ergo easier/faster to put on since you essentially just have to strap it on and then do the one buckle in the back - it is easier to put baby in. Little things but I like that the waist buckle on the Ergo is on one side, not behind me like on the Gemini. I do feel like the Gemini is a bit more comfortable as I like how the straps criss cross on your back, vs the Ergo's one strap across the back. The Ergo straps sometimes cut into the back of my upper arms (but I'm a bigger girl so it could just be that my arms are chubby -- I wear a six 16 or so for reference). I love that the Ergo has a nice generous hood for when DD would fall asleep during walks (rarely happens now, she's too busy looking around) and I LOVE the pockets on it. Makes it so easy to stash your cell phone.
When DD was a newborn, I loved the Gemini b/c no insert needed, she felt very secure, and it was super comfortable. As she got bigger, I found it a bit awkward - she just seems to fit better in the Ergo right now.
Also we have not tried the Gemini facing out, but DD still sees a lot in the Ergo, she is constantly turning her head from side to side.
If I had to do it over, I probably would have been happy with just the ergo and using our Moby until we could do the Ergo w/out the newborn insert.
I get super hot wearing either of these, even in cooler weather. I think all carriers are hot if you ask me, you have a little heat-generating babe strapped to you!
I find the Gemini and the Ergo equal in terms of weight distribution and stress on my back, etc. I felt like the Gemini goes up a bit higher behind DD's head - it is longer I think all around, which is nice, but now she doesn't need the head support so it annoys her.
Also, while they're supposed to be safe, I can't stand the stupid two-handed clips on the Gemini. I find the Ergo much easier to put on in a dirty parking lot, the straps don't hit the ground. It is near impossible for me to suit up in the Gemini without the straps hitting the ground.
Sorry if that was jumbled.
