TTC After a Loss

XP: Natural Ectopic Resolution?

Has anyone had one? I'm feeling like something of a freak show.

We found the ectopic 2 weeks ago and since I wasn't in major pain and my levels were already dropping significantly we've been waiting it out. No pain or bleeding for over a week now. I'll be doing b/w weekly and will probably have another u/s once levels <5. They were 315 last Tuesday and waiting to hear what Thursday's were.

Re: XP: Natural Ectopic Resolution?

  • I haven't had that happen but after my ectopic I did a lot of research and reading and read that a good percentage of ectopics resolve themselves...typically we just don't know about them at all. Usually if they are going to resolve themselves, however, it happens very early on in the pregnancy. Similar to a chemical pregnancy in that many women would have ever known they were even pregnant if they hadn't tested.

I'm glad you've been able to do this naturally. I hope things continue going well for you!

  • Mine wasn't resolving naturally either, but here is a relevant paragraph from the New England Journal of Medicine 2009 Clinical Practice Overview on ectopic pregnancy:

"When hCG values decrease at a rate that is at least as high as that expected in a spontaneous miscarriage, continued outpatient surveillance is warranted until levels are undetectable. Approximately 50% of women with an ectopic pregnancy present with increasing hCG levels, and 50% present with decreasing hCG values.

    ...

"In women in whom hCG levels are decreasing, serial hCG measurements should be performed until hCG is no longer detectable in the serum; this may take up to 6 weeks. Women in whom an intrauterine gestation has not been confirmed re- main at risk for rupture of an ectopic pregnancy until there is no detectable hCG.

    ...

"Some ectopic pregnancies resolve spontaneously without therapy. Although case series have suggested rates of resolution as high as 70%, these rates are derived from selected cases of early tubal gestations with hCG values that were below 1000 mIU per milliliter and were decreasing. Women who are offered the option of expectant management (i.e., watchful waiting) must be informed of the potential risk of tubal rupture despite decreasing hCG values."

...so it's not that unusual to have it resolve naturally.  HOpe that helps.
