Adding cereal to bottle question

Ds is having bad reflux.  We have been referred to a GI because Zantac didn't work.  Pedi said to try adding rice cereal to the bottle.  What works better for baby to drink thicker formula...cutting the nipple or going up a nipple size?  or do the Y cut nipples work?  Right now he uses the stage 2 dr browns.

I am not thrilled about having to put cereal in the bottle.  Enfamil AR worked for my daughter but we can't use that because ds is intolerant to milk and is on soy formula.

We use the Advent bottles with the Cereal Nipples, that works fantastic! But you probably can just go up a size too. As for adding rice cereal, that really constipated DD2, so bad we had to add merilax to the bottles too. So we switched to putting in oatmeal instead of rice and it's helped a lot. I also think she spits up less with the oatmeal then with the rice. Ask your GI DR about using oatmeal. Ours said that was fine, and I could also use barley if I wanted, and it's a 1tsp per 4oz. So I use a 1/2 Tbs for a 6oz bottle. DD2 was put on Prevacid and that's given a lot of relief too.

Zantac didn't work for my son either, so my pedi switched him to prevacid. He didn't mention rice cereal at all. The Prevacid has been working great.

  • We have the evenflo bottles. I ended up just making the holes bigger using a fork. She doesn't have a problem getting it out now!
