Any Gardeners?

We have massive flower gardens in our yard from the older couple that last owned the house.

DH and I can't keep up with it and it's more of a hassle than a hobby right now. We've been spending the weekend downgrading and getting rid of a lot of it.

However, I still like some color and I remember loving the Hibiscus' last year. They haven't bloomed this year---yet do they look like they are anywhere near. Worries?

We dug one up and DH broke the root....it's a massive sized root. Should I try and replant that...save it until fall??? Any ideas/advice? Neither DH and I have any sort of green thumbs.

Re: Any Gardeners?

  • Hibiscus would not even be peeking out of the ground yet. I'm a bit north of you, and mine doesn't even come up until late June or July, blooms around July/August. Yes, put the root parts back into the ground ASAP. It is not like a bulb where you dig it up and save it until next year, it will dry out and die! Don't worry too much about breaking it, you might have diminished the size a bit, but other parts of the root are probably fine and will come back as normal.

  • Depending on where you are in Illinois, I'll gladly come take some of it! I've been spending so much time trying to establish a nice garden! The previous owners of our house did absolutely nothing- other than put tons of ugly cheap rocks in te front three I have to dig up!

Replant the root from the hibiscus, it won't bloom for a while, even with the crazy warm weather we have been having. Good luck, I know it can be hard (and frustrating) to get the landscaping the way you want it!
