October 2011 Moms

Jeezus it's not like I gave my kid poison

I mentioned a little while ago that I gave DS frozen fruit in a mesh feeder.  Well we went to the early years centre and I went to have him weighed (22.9 lbs what a tank)  and the nurse said he was perfect, happy smiling all that and then asked if I needed any advice for dealing with his obvious teething.  I said, "Nope got it under control.  He was fussy the other day so I shoved some frozen food in a mesh feeder and he was happy as a clam after."  She said, "Good idea! I love it when moms avoid chemically treating something like teething!  What did you give him?"  "He had a peach slice, and then because I was out of those, I shoved some strawberry and banana slices in there. He loved them."

She went off on me like the strawberries were poison, that you aren't supposed to introduce them until he is a year.  She insisted on checking him for hives and handed me a list of baby safe foods and told me how lucky I was this time around.  Okay WTF?  First of all he's over 6 month old.  Berries are fine.  Second of all,  I know they are a potential allergen.  I watched for a reaction. He was fine.  Third of all, miss Judgey McJudgerson Tylenol or Advil for teething is not a bad thing.  If my baby is in enough pain that I think he needs either of those I will give it to him.

I am just glad I didn't tell her about the lady bug he ate that same afternoon.  She might have called CAS.

  • I keep thinking I should go to the early year centre and then I read something like this or hear something and then I reconsider.....

  • We gave DD strawberries twice yesterday and she went to town on them. Our pedi said to hold off on honey, peanutbutter, shellfish and eggs (I don't remember if its the whites or yokes) and to not switch over to cows milk from the BM till she was a year. Everything else was given the green light. I don't see why a strawberry would be that big a deal if he was acting fine and you didn't see anything to be concerned with.

Eh, medical literature says no problem starting at 6 months if you have no history of allergans. And plus so, I have basically been addicted to peanut butter since his birth and have been touching/kissing him with my grimy peanutbuttery hands/mouth and he is still alive.  I am a horrible parent!

Clearly you didn't eat enough of it trying to force yourself into labor.

The strawberries or the pineapple?  I didn't know either was supposed to induce labor...I wish I had, maybe this little girl wouldn't have been 9 days late! Wink

Right, but I have eczema babies so no nuts or shellfish until 3. She doesn't know that she is missing out on anything yet--we will get there, there just isn't any rush. Besides peanut butter isn't the most nutritious so I really see no need for it at this stage.

There will be no peanut butter for my kid. Like ever. Because I am allergic. Deadly allergic. Not risking my life for something which kinda looks like anything out of his diaper in the first place.

Sounds like that nurse needs to brush up on the current literature. But I can't believe you let your son eat a lady bug!!

This.  The Public Health unit gave us a pamphlet and a class, neither of which said to avoid strawberries or anything else except honey and cow's milk (until 1 year) unless you have a family history of allergies or the baby has eczema.  But just because there isn't a reaction the first time you give your baby something doesn't mean you're in the clear.  Very often it doesn't happen until the second or third time.

I'm hoping the judgement about giving medication for teething was more along the lines of "try other things first, then medicate if necessary" but I doubt it, based on the rest of your story.

We tried strawberry yogurt with DD when she was 9 months, but she got a rash. Held off until after a year and she will now eat a whole container! DS has a lot of issues, so we aren't even attempting until 1. I'm allergic (but because of a medication) so that scares me too.

As for peanut butter, I definitely didn't try that until like 13-15 months. It scared me. I wouldn't even think of it before 1. Anytime before 1 is just a little too soon IMO.

Conflicting info everywhere... When we had Gavin's skin tests done at the asthma and allergy specialist, they said because he had eczema and allergies/asthma we should introduce common allergy food like peanut butter as soon as possible. Hmm...

My friend's son is the same way, she is on the board of the Food Allergy Initiative (they are the ones who got nut products banned from schools).  I think the hardest thing was when he went to camp and then college (he is 19) where there wasn't as much control.

  • Cannot quote on my phone, Liz, but I am only nut free at home. I feel like people should nit be inconvenienced in public because of my issues. I also grew up in Germany, where they do not do nut free schools. They are aware of the allergy, teachers will have an eye on the kid, but generally you need to be careful yourself. Wasn't easy in primary, but it really helped me cope and adjust. There was no rude awakening once I was at college and whatnot. I am sometimes not sure if we do kids a favor by creating an artificial environment like that. You need a safe place, which is home. School is the outside world. And as much as it sucks, the outside world is not adjusting to keep the individual safe. It's good to learn that early on.

  • peanut butter before one scares the crap out of me.  this whole "well, we have no family history" thing is crap.  i know of at least 5 kids w/severe peanut allergies who's entire family has no issues w/ it. it's so common now a days and so dangerous.  at 8 months old your baby cant' tell you if their throat is closing up!!  my son had a reaction at 14m, after eating p.b at least 5x w/ no issue.  so just b/c you've kissed a baby after eating p.b, and they were fine, doesn't' mean anything.  sometimes it takes up to 10 exposures for them to react.
