another bday party menu ?

We are planning on doing a large party andDH and I don't want to be stuck grilling or heating/cooking food and miss LO's party.  It is a "puppy" theme, but we aren't having an easy time finding theme related foods that are not difficult to make.

Sandwich platters of assorted meats/cheese/veggies (catered)

Tortellini salad with roasted red peppers, artichoke hearts, black olives

Potato salad

veggies, hummus, dip, chips

watermelon

"Puppy chow"-chex mix, white chocolate coated snack

cake

Lemonade, Iced Tea, Water, minimal wine & beer

The question is:  I saw these bone breadsticks on pinterest and they sound easy and I could make them ahead of time, but would having breadsticks be overkill if we are having sandwiches?  Is there anything different that could be done in a similar way?

Can you think of something else that would be puppy theme related as far as food goes?  We are inviting about 60 people (family & close friends), so anything that we do would need to be  easy to make for a large group.

ETA:  oops!  Forgot to include watermelon!

  • You could do bone sugar cookies? They can be made in advance or ordered?

That said, I don't think the bone breadsticks are a bad idea, especially if you offered them with a heartier dip, like a spinach dip or something?

Only thing I might add is some fruit. Even just fresh strawberries that you just wash and toss in a bowl.

  • I don't think they'd be over-kill but smaller ones might be better. The only thing you may want to try to add is some sort of fruit. I like to have at least one fruit dish and one veggie dish when serving a bunch of people.

I love the dog bone breadsticks!   They sound cute and very kid friendly!   I would cut the breadsticks in half before tying the knots so they are a little smaller.   Plus have a couple dipping sauces.   You can make them more like garlic breadsticks by brushing them with garlic butter before throwing them in the oven and then having marinara and pesto sauce to dip them in.

Are you having lots of kids at the party?   I would make some kid friendly sandwiches on regular old bread(ham and cheese, peanut butter and jelly if you know there aren't any allergies) and use a dog bone shaped cookie cutter to make some sandwiches for them.   My older guy LOVES shaped sandwiches!!!!

  • Those dog bone breadsticks are adorable! As PP suggested I'd cut them in half and have some kind of dip to go with them. And I'd put the dip in a doggy dish like akayf found, soooo cute!!
